Paperbacks, or writing for the trade

Question: Do DC and M***** take the sales figures for trades into consideration when they decide to cancel a book or keep it going?

I just picked up the trade collecting the first 7 issues of the new Teen Titans series since I missed all of them and have heard great things about this book (many of them from here). As I was about half-way thru I found myself thinking I should buy the next trade when it comes out. You have to admit there are at least 2 big advantages to the trade format: They fits nicely on the bookshelf and there are no ads.

The industry seems to be moving more and more towards trades all the time, but I wonder if they are taking this into account when they look at sales on a book and decide to cancel it or keep it going. Will a book with subpar sales be allowed to continue if it is selling tons of trades? I would think "yes, of course" but with everyone in the industry preaching the numbers game on individuial issues I'm not so sure.

I have been beating this drum for some time now. Many fans declare they are going to "wait for the trade" (especially in this time when too many writers write for the trade), and so do not pick up the monthly issues. With "good sales" on a book consideted to be 30 or 40 thousand these days, a few thousand readers could make a lot of difference.

And, yes, the difference could be between success and failure for the monthly.
