First off, thanks to Todd for hosting this fine competition and good luck to all those who have entered.
The whole Star Wars theme is my "tongue in cheek" interpretation of the SSUP. It symbolizes the Society's fight against the evil Unemployment Empire (represented by Darth Mep), and features Odd Todd himself as the Society's Jedi hero (flanked by a well-endowed friend and his trusty sidekick, ElfUp-D2) utilizing his Pringles sabre in an effort to fight the good fight - not only for himself, but for the entire SSUP. Also staring fudge stripe cookies in the duel roles of x-wing fighters and the Death Star.
That being said, I chose to design this crest using Todd's illustration style in order to maintain the artistic continuity that he has already established on his site. And the thought of keeping with a more traditional crest format crossed by mind, but I didn't imagine the SSUP in this way. In my opinion, a traditional crest portrays a "regalness" associated with those who are from old money and who hold financial power - the same men and women whose greed-driven decisions lead to unemplyment, and hence, the reason the SSUP was established in the first place. So LONG LIVE THE RESISTANCE!!! (But may your membership in the SSUP be short-lived.)
