Cedar is very nice wood but it's not the only good carving wood. If you want to carve, and especially if you want to learn more by carving more, carve any kind of wood you can get. Sycamore, birch, oak, walnut, spruce and mulberry are all good carving woods which you may be able to get for free from local tree trimmers.
