I agree that LAC is a very hard book to read. I read it before I saw the film and found myself wanting to skip parts of it. The one thing it explains though is why in the film when Bus White is looking at the body of Sid Hutchence, the patrolman calls him Sgt White instead of Officer White! I'm afraid I find James Elroy to be a very weird and creepy man who is full of his own self importance, and don't think I could manage to read any of his other 'literary masterpieces'
