Police Appeal for Information and Witnesses.
Equine Liaison Officers in Hampshire are appealing for witnesses after a young coloured horse was found dead in a field off Windmill Hill, Alton at 1800 hours on 29th June 2008
The black and white filly was found lying in the field with a ligature tied around her neck. Initial enquiries revealed that she died of strangulation from the rope that was tied around her neck and caught on a nearby tree stump.
This area is heavily used by families and dog walkers. Police are interested to hear from anyone who was in the area over the week end of 27th 28th 29th June 2008.
It is suspected that someone may have placed a rope around the horse's neck to either steal it, to cause it deliberate harm or perhaps mischief making. It is suspected that the horse may have bolted and those responsible for placing the rope around the horse's neck could not retrieve it. The horse then wandered about the field until the rope caught on a tree stump causing fatal injuries to the horse.
The horse would have suffered for some time before it died.
Police are currently trying to trace the owner of the horses.
Police stress this is an isolated incident, that there have been no other reported similar incidents in the area and the remaining horses were unharmed.
The actions of the person or persons responsible are inexcusable and the police are conducting enquiries to trace them.
The Police need the public's help to solve this crime
