Precious Metals exit

Larry,

You have been talking about how you believe gold and silver are in the beginning of a bull market. Therefore, you have added PMPIX to your model portfolio. So far I'm with you. But then your risk is "Buy and hold until further notice." I thought you have been teaching us never ever to open a trade without knowing your exit. So what are your exit plans for your precious metal positions?

Also, on another topic, do you know where to find free real-time (or slightly delayed) prices for the 30-Year Bond?

Again, thanks for all of the great info. I am learning a ton.

Brett,

Remember why I own precious metals (and mining stocks) in the first place. I consider my position as an insurance policy against a weaker dollar. To me it is not a trade or even an investment in the traditional sense. So my exit strategy is to own precious metals until I no longer think I need an insurance policy. I don't expect that to happen for seveal years. Also, please note that I have limited my exposure (so far) to no more than 10% of my portfolio. Many conventional financial planners would recommend a similar allocation to a precious metals position under any circumstances.

There are many places where you can get a quote on the long bond. One is StockCharts.com. The symbol is $USB.

So, I guess your insurance could last for many years. How about option/LEAP positons? They have to be exited at some point (probably way before you feel you don't need insurance anymore).

Am I missing something? The Stockcharts.com $USB only gets updated at the end of the day.

Brett,

I would just rollover the options into a more distant month before expiration.

I apologize. I missed the part where you said you want real time or delayed quotes rather than end-of-the-day. Your best bet is probably bond futures quotes. Here is one place to get intra-day quotes.

I have been using the 50 day SMA (for the fund) for a while now with success. If I get stopped out, I wait for it to cross above the average again and buy. I don't mind the whipsaws (the commissions) because I treat them as insurance against a loss in my capital.

Martin,

Your way is fine because you have a strategy to re-enter the market.
