larry,

have you read the new book yet? any tho'ts?

i read it... i have to say that, i really like his CANSLIM (i.e. LONG) system. i'm not too impressed with the new book on shorting, however. i think your weekly parabolic SAR system is probably just as good - certainly easier to "read". his system seems very objective. yours is concrete.

anyway... my 2 cents.

Joe,

I have it. But I bought it along with a lot of other books and I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Just flipping through it, it looks like it's mostly charts. Is his shorting strategy just the flip side of CANSLIM?

his short system is not exactly the flip of CANSLIM - i don't want to ruin it but... some points:

he wants to short ONLY when the broad market is under distribution and he wants to be in lagging sectors. these are the opposite of CANSLIM i guess. he doesn't talk too much about fundamentals - EPS, ROE, etc.

he says look for yesterday's leaders to be today's laggers. he then puts a huge emphasis on technical analysis - failed cup with handles & head & shoulder tops. his entry into head & shoulders is different than what i've seen before (i won't ruin that for you).

he also likes to take quick profits, 20 - 30% ONLY rather than riding it. his only nod toward money mgmt was, be sure to set a profit objective at least twice as large as your stop/loss that way you can be wrong more often & still profit (paraphrased).

it's not bad - but his entry seems a bit convoluted & objective to me. i say, once you've identified a bear broad mkt, find a sector with bearish weekly parabolic SAR dot, then short weak stocks within that sector - ("weak" can be MA cross over, SAR dots, failed break-outs... whatever).

it's worth reading... not sure it's worth trading.

p.s. i don't want to ruin the ending but... the butler did it!

larry (or anyone),

which ETF's do you think are best for shorting now?

ICF, IGW, IYT, IYZ, XLB, XLY, GLD, XLI

Joe,

The strongest relative strength so far in January has been consumer staples and energy. The worst has been technology. So, off your list, I would want to be short the semis (IGW) and telecom (IYZ).
