Some of you may recall the inker complaining at Cons about the lack of detail in my pencils on Amazing Spider - Man . . .

Penciling Examples 5/30/03 (Large Files)

All comments were written by John Byrne.

Chosen entirely at random:

This one is about body language. Everyone has their own. Keep this in mind when drawing multiple figures.

Sample of what I call "argle-bargle". Roger calls it "crackerjack". All the fiddly bits that look like they are really something, but aren't.

I decided to say "farewell" to XHY by inking Hank's birthday party myself. This is the next to last page as I sent it to Tom, with the top 2 panels uninked.

Note the, er, note to Tom -- and the indication of which sized elipse to use for the wheels of Xavier's chair. (Hmm, I wonder if this is what Erik "If I Only Had a Brain" Larsen means about me drawing wheelchairs with only 2 wheels . . . . )

I had a lot of plans for Candy Southern, before XHY got the axe. Walt and Weezie had killed her off in X-FACTOR, and it bothered me a bit because I didn't think she was important enough to die! So I decided to use these "untold tales" to up her significance in X-Lore.

This one is mostly about texture . Always important.

And this one is about verisimilitude . I did not use photo refererence for the top panel. Didn't need to, since it depends on everyone "knowing" what NYC looks -- or looked -- like.

Breakdowns, Byrne Style (Large Files)

Some more of those lacking-in-detail pages I did for Amazing Spider - Man . . .

You'll note on some of these pages my own little innovation, when drawing Spider-Man, of having him frequently right side up in the panel, while the background is inverted. I noticed several other artists pick up on this after I started doing it.

And this one, from the issue I scripted myself, so the dialog is already in place on the page. . .
