At the time Carpenter and Crane met, Carpenter was a regional service manager for Sony & AKAI corporations, and was up to date with the latest technology at that time. He was accustomed to being around stars (he taught Elvis Presley, Alfred Hitchcock, Red Skelton, just to name a few, how to use a VCR). Being in the position he was in (regional manager), this gave him lots of flexibility and time to travel with Crane around the country when Crane was involved in dinner theater. Surprisingly, in the early 60s he was involved in the roller-derby sport, touring with skating teams from LA and NY, and gained a reputation as one of the "bad guys."
