I have yet to read any of these issues of the good doctor by M. Stern...except for the excellent Dr Strage/Dr.Doom OGN...

So what issues were written by Stern? Who were the artists?

Can someone list a quick synopsis of the arcs/issue numbers?

What are the best stories worth picking up??

Q for M. Stern: werent you and frank Miller supposed to collaborate on Dr. Strange?? What happened???

The best I can do...

Here is the best I can do:

DR. STRANGE 48-51 (Stern/Marshall Rodgers): Dr. Strange meets Morgana Blessing, who can see his astral form and is somewhat impervious to his hypnotic powers. Morgana- who's fallen in love with Strange (much to Clea's chagrin)- becomes a pawn for Baron Mordo. His plan involves sending girl, sorcerer, and disciple to WWII where Mordo's grandfather is attempting to bring Dormamummu to Earth. Strange has to ally himself with Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos to stop this.

DR. STRANGE 52-53 (Stern/Marshall Rodgers): Dr. Strange strives to help a comatose Morgana by going through time and meeting her past incarnations. This takes him to Ancient Egypt under Rama Tut, during the events of FANTASTIC FOUR#19. At the end of this story, Clea, convinced that Morgana's love for Strange is greater than her own, resigns as disciple and leaves to start a rebellion at the Dark Dimension- much to Strange's grief. Good story.

DS 54: unknown.

DS 55 (Stern/Michael Golden): Strange, heartbroken over Clea's departure, has to get his act together in order to triumph over D'Spayre.

DS 56 (Stern/Paul Smith): Morgana interviews the doctor, who retells his origin, how he entered the Inner Sanctum, and met Wong. I love this issue, especially the end with Strange and Morgana.

DS 57 (Stern/unknown): Strange has to try out new disciples, one of whom is Amanda Sefton (Nightcrawler's girl). His refusal sends Amanda's mommy Margoli Szardos to reek revenge.

DS 58-62 (Stern/Dan Green-Steve Leholia): Mystically removed of all his weaknesses, Count Dracula tries to find the Darkhold- the one thing that can destroy him. Dr. Strange gets the book and initiates the Montesi Formula, destroying all vampires in the marvel Universe (for the time being). Only read one issue (when Dracula besieges Avengers Mansion: good one).

DS 63: unknown

DS 64 wasn't written by Stern

DS 65? (Stern/Smith): A charlatan leeches off rich people with his act concerning the recitation of arcane words. Strange fears this act might accidentally summon demons to Earth, so he tries to stop him...despite having a very big headache. Good story.

DS 66 (Stern/Smith) Dr. Strange sets out to find a Holy Lama's incarnation...at a golf course!

DS 67 (Stern/Steve Leihola): With Jessica Drew and Hannibal King, Dr. Strange fights some cultist priests.

DS 68 (Stern/Smith): Strange heads for England to help the Black Knight. The poor guy has been driven insane by the blood curse of his ebony blade. Good story.

DS 69 (Stern/Smith): Strange and the Black Knight travel back to America on a cruise liner. Umar, ruler of the Dark Dimension, tries to destroy him.

DS 70 (Stern/Bret Delvins): An interdimensional Conan-type Warlord makes a deal with the U.S. Military to bring nuclear weaponry to his dimension. Strange teaches him the error of his ways. Good story.

DS 71-73 (Stern/Smith): In this three-part saga (and personal favorite), Dr. Strange enters the Dark Dimension to aid Clea in her rebellion against Umar. We learn the origin of Dormammumu and Umar, rebel Clea's ties with the tyrant are revealed, and the Dimension gets a new ruler! Smith's art is so Ditko-esque!

DS 74 (Stern/Leihola): Dr. Strange confronts the Beyonder.

That's as far as I know.

Correction...

February 2 2004, 12:06 PM

Mr. Stern did not write 63-64 or 74.

Issue 70 had the warlord stealing weaponry instead of dealing, and the artist was Bret Blevins.

My apologies to all.

A few more you may have missed...

February 5 2004, 4:44 PM

I also wrote DOCTOR STRANGE #27-30 and 32, edited #31, plotted #33 and #74, and wrote a short five-pager (with art by Mike Golden and Craig Russell) that appeared in issue #46.

Frank was supposed to become the penciler for DOC back in 1981 -- and even drew a house ad to promote it -- but then he became too busy writing and drawing DAREDEVIL. File that one under "What Might Have Been."
