"The Erotic and the Mystical: The Case of Lekhah Dodi"
with Reuven Kimelman

Why does the best-known Shabbat song, Lekhah Dodi, focus on the three S's of Sabbath, Salvation, and Sexuality? How did Jewish mysticism foment a revolution of the romantic in Judaism? Its revolutionary erotic vision of reality is epitomized in the mystical meaning of the Shabbat candles and the singing of
Lekhah Dodi. We will focus on how the feminization of the Sabbath leads to its eroticization as well as on the connection between the marriage metaphor and the salvation of the individual, the people, and all humanity.

After the lecture there will be ample time for discussion and book signing.

Reuven Kimelman is a professor of Talmud, Midrash and liturgy at Brandeis University. He is the author of "The Mystical Meaning of Lekhah Dodi and Kabbalat Shabbat" (published in Hebrew), "The Hidden Poetry of the Jewish Prayerbook" (an audio coursebook recently published by the Brookline-based Our Learning
Company LLC), and the forthcoming "Rhetoric of Jewish Prayer: A Literary and Historical Commentary on the Prayerbook."
