Spiral curls

You rarely see these anymore - except maybe at a wedding or a prom. But I'd like to try putting my hair up in those long spiral curls. I would guess the easiest way is simply to shape the curls with my curling iron, then don't brush them out? Or maybe lightly arrange them with my fingers?

Does anyone have a better or easier way, or should I try this? Thanks.
