The World of internet radio is very complex and its a big thing that people at one time thought was going to be HUGE. It was going to be the alternative for people who were sick of mainstream AM/FM radio. The filed of internet radio was supposed to be the ****. However guess what, it has become just that, ****! Now this could be for several reasons however I think it comes down to 3 big points.
First point which is the biggest of the group and I mean, Greed. Now this came from the sides of internet broadcasters to the streaming sites themselves. The greed factor comes from the money issue. Now most of these sites all had the technology and the streaming to get the job done. However instead of pooling all the resources to go after the big boys, these people went out and wanted to take them on themselves. First you had Live365.com who had the tools to get it done, but their broadcaster was crap. So what could they have done went and sided with Audiorealm or OTS Jukebox makers and have a kickass broadcasting unit. Instead they all sat back and said that they are the #1 person or group and nothing got done. Then when XM and Sirius strated up, they all said that they were free and had better content and said no one would pay for radio. Well let me tell all you freaks in net radio something, if the content is there. People will pay for it, for instance if I had my choice between Audiorealm monthly pass or a monthly pass on XM, I would pay for the XM. They have mainstream, commercial free music and shock jocks like Opie and Anthony. If I pay for Audiorealm, I will get the music but I will have to hunt for it. I also will have to put up with a bunch of wannabe shock jocks who could not hold Howard Sterns mic.
Second point is failure to capitalize on the next big thing status. Instead of certain people pooling their resources and all to put advertising and money on the table, they all blew it. The big talk was Howard Stern was coming to net radio and everyone was like, well we will show Stern, this is our house. Instead all these loosers should have stepped up and made it as easy as possible to get Stern here. Instead I am sure Bandwith providers went out of their way to price Stern out of coming to the online world. Then the millions of sites to get Stern should have. Instead, they all thought they were the man and Stern was an invader. Instead, Stern goes to Sirius and the net radio world is left with The Des. Lovely and great job, internet radio you blew it once again.
Failure is the 3rd shot at Internet radio being done, Yes the net radio blew this thing and they blew it big time. All the rejects and all the wanna be notalents wanted and have come to net radio. Now some have made their way and have made it a successful run. However most have either snoozed out their listeners or have wasted their resources and dropped every member of audience they ever had. What can the net radio world ever do to become a star. Well boys, just get ready to compete with the world of CB radio. Breaker, Breaker 1-9, we got some competion. Net radio will never be able to compete with Satalight without talent and organazition. Net radio will never be able to compete with star power. I say this cause what brings people to XM and Sirius is not the commercial free factor. Its the talent, such as Bubba The Love Sponge and Howard Stern going to Sirius and O and A along with Ron and Fez going to XM. So If the talent is not there, there is going to be no sales and run. So who knows that net radio can do to become the thing.
Finally to wrap this column up, I hope that someday people look back on this column and go. Jiggy has no clue what is going on, we have no greed and all the talent in the world. I dont think it will happen but who knows if things dont change, net radio will be this centurys CB radio.
