The folks over at Radio and Records website said it best, From the “You Can’t Tell The Players Without A Scorecard” Department: CBS Radio. Yes CBS radio has once again gotten in trouble and it is not pretty. First off let's examine the issue that CBS is now having issues with Free FM. These guys are not radio people and they do not know radio and the last few years have shown it. Now they have had to flip formats and possibly killed their own ratings winners in one shot. CBS radio who used to be infinity broadcasting and is now CBS and is a total failure.
First things are first what has contributed to the downfall of this company? The folks at CBS radio determined a shakeup needed to occur and Mel Karmazine who ran the successful company for years took a retirement check. CBS radio hired some non radio experienced person in Joel Hollander to come in and run the company. Then when Howard Stern was being attacked by the government and being censored by FCC. CBS backed down and away from their biggest ratings winner and the face of their empire. Stern bolts to alternative media in Sirius radio and begins to make his show an infomercial for Sirius and instead of CBS suspending him or taking him off till he left for the space waves of sat alight radio. They kept him on and then when he bolted, they sued him and eventually settling with the King of all media. CBS wasted tons of time here and lost tons of money in doing this stunt. Now CBS is screwed on no one to replace Stern and no backup plan in place for him leaving. CBS also lost wasted airtime by letting Stern promote and also gave Sirius free ad time.
Next CBS brain trust went out and took one idea of hiring one man to take over for something that it took Stern years to build. David Lee Roth was brought in to make some headway and they used Stern's remaining days to build up a audience and familiarize people with Roth. Roth was brought in and was given some direction but not much. Roth would not be the only person brought in, Rover's Morning glory was brought in to cover the middle of the country. Adam Carolla from Loveline and The Man show was brought in to take over part of the country. Eventually Rover failed and was demoted and in some places dropped. Adam held strong but did not do much in the area of improving the ratings. Roth failed big time and on the day ratings were to be the big story. CBS sued Stern to drive media attention away from the low ratings. Roth was suspended and then brought back, Roth left on vacation and came back and then hated everyone. Roth was then replaced by Opie And Anthony from XM radio. Roth was then told and many in the media were then told, He was a place holder till a deal could be reached with O and A.
Free FM was and is another issue, Free FM was brought in to be an experiment when the Sat alight and net radio people saw talk radio as a money making machine. Free FM was brought in and made the hosting similar to the morning deal with different hosts threw out the country. Free FM eventually failed in parts of the country but held strong in the Cali area. Free FM would be torched in less than 2 years and rock radio with a morning show would return to the airwaves. Most of the hosts would be fired or moved to other areas or stations within CBS radio.
What do you have here is Free FM and CBS radio is in ruins and they have not made good determinations. First off they took the ratings that worked in the LA area and dumped them for rock music. They took some ratings winners in the other areas and dumped them as well. They helped Kidd Chris in Philly get 2 stations then dumped him before momentum picked up. Stern was a bad loss CBS was not prepared for. However CBS needs to go hire a radio guy and make this ship sail again.
