This week's rant was going to focus on Wrestle Maina this Sunday evening. However I noticed a story that is slowly getting bigger by the day than WWE's big event. I have dubbed this the most un watch able Wrestling event in years and I love Professional Wrestling. However this last week has been a big one and got bigger on Sunday evening. Frank Shamrock who in many people's opions has and will be always a sort of mystery in the world of MMA. Many people wanted and have always wanted Frankie to get his, and he got it on Saturday evening. Plus UFC and others growing too fast, do you believe and I believe that MMA could burn itself out.
First off the big news that was Saturday evening, not only was Frank facing off with Cung Le who has always been my favorite fighter to never venture out past his safe zone. Cung Le got a big win and a title on Saturday evening when he beat Frank Shamrock. Now Frank has been my favorite and not so fav. Frank came onto the scene and tried to become the Ric Flair of MMA, trying his dam nest to hold people down not only in the Lions Den but in the world of MMA and also like Don King make his own rules. For instance you look at his fight against Igor Zinoviev at UFC 16. Frank dropped Igor on his head on purpose to be an ass. Another thing he did was against Elvis Sinosic, he kicked the man where he needed to and broke his arm. Another move that was low class and to follow up this he came back to the event,WEC 6. He had pick of fight and he also essentially put this company on the road to ruin. Frank would not allow his rights to be used on the re-sale essentially making the dvd a non-seller. Plus he got a ton of bank off the group. So when Frank lost the way he did with Cung Le breaking his arm or wrist{several sites have said different things.}I was happy as a clam to see this happen.
Second thing that has grabbed my attention is the departure of Tim Sylvia from the UFC this past Friday. This marks another mistake that UFC is making with letting him go, I understand that he has been a very slow and boring fighter and has promo skills of a mime however, Tim is just like all the jobbers and losers that Vince allowed WCW to get. Not saying Tim is a jobber but guess what he has the name that can make another MMA group and making a Fedor/Tim fight would make money for someone. Dana is slowly making the same mistakes that Vince made and Dana could become Vince but I do not mean the owner of WCW Vince, I meant the Vince that almost went out of business back in the 90's.
Dana is letting guys like Elite XC and Strike Force to get Network deals and also is allowing fighters who people will pay to see take off. Vince let Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall and others scoot out the door. He figured he would just make new stars and what did WCW do with it, they took the name brand stars and squeezed more life out of them. Hogan almost made or contributed to the downfall of WWE. Dana is making the same mistake, for instance he let Tim take off and he is letting Tito Ortiz and let Randy go. So basically some other promotion who has some money and some network deals, etc. Can come along and make a ton of ratings and make a ton of money off the guys that Dana believes will do nothing. Vince thought he would wave a wand and make it happen, Dana also thinks he can make his TUF factory make him new stars.
What I hate to think also is does MMA have a shelf life or does it have to eventually become like Boxing and Wrestling is, which is people watch it but it's not that big of a deal anymore. I would like to see MMA not be so big but I would like to see MMA go back to the dark days. For instance I liked it when everyone could not get in. I liked to see top flight guys like Shamrock,Ortiz and others get in the door. However now you have all the freaks and geeks getting in, you have Kimbo and others coming in and every Tom,Dick and Harry have a MMA promotion. I fear that MMA could burn itself out.
I usually take this part of the rant to go off on my take, but I would like to have you the reader finish the column. Will MMA burn itself out or will it never reach a point that other combat sports have ?
