There is a book out there that may be something that you are looking for. The book is not written by Maharishi nor does it cater to NSR but it talks a lot about effortless meditations such as NSR and TM. The book of which I speak is titled, "The Book of Meditation The Complete Guide to Modern Meditation", by Patricia Carrington Ph.D. In that book she makes references to TM but not to NSR as NSR did not exist at the time she wrote the book.
She also has another companion manual titled, "Learn to Meditate Manual". This particular companion manual comes with several cassettes that take the reader through mantra selection, checking procedure, an actual meditation using the person's chosen mantra (one they choose and not one assigned to them) and addresses the mechanics of meditation.
To make a long story short I believe this book, with its companion book, may be just what you are looking for.
I'm not sure were you can buy it. I bought my many years ago and don't know if it is still in print or not but you could try a search on Google or something. I'm sure it's still available if you look.
