Steve,
The feeling that we are not "going deep" in meditation is caused by stress release. Since stress release is an activity of the body, and since the mind and body are intimately connected, the process of stress release creates mental activity. This mental activity causes lack of clarity and interferes with transcending (the dive within). This is all very normal.
The reason we feel like we are going deeper at one time but not another time, is the different rates of release of stress. Since we want to release stress, we know that that is what is important, not the actual depth of diving within. Let me know if this is unclear; I know it is a subtle point, but it is important to understand.
You should judge the value of your sessions by the results in your daily life, not by experiences during meditation.
That having been said, it is possible to deepen the practice by attending residence courses, since they afford an opportunity to release much deeper stresses. See the posting titled "NSR Residence Courses" for details.
As more people discover NSR and practice for longer periods of time, more people will be interested in attending residence courses and we will be able to offer them. I have a dream that someday we will be able to offer not only weekend courses, but even longer courses for more dramatic and efficient personal growth.
