To much meditation ?

Just to be aware-
I think it is important to be aware that one should not overdo meditation as this can lead to an over release of stress. There have been incidents of people meditating for long periods having problems. 15-20 mins x2 seems fine in most cases unless there are some serious underlying problems.
NSR is excellent, but steady as you go !

A plea for enough information and a unique name

May 4 2008, 1:31 PM

John,

Are you the same John who is making other postings, or a different John? It is best to use a unique name when making postings.

Are you posting this warning about not meditating more than 20 minutes for a specific reason? The normal meditation time for NSR is 15 minutes, not 20 minutes or more.

Please let me have some more information so I can be of help.

too much meditation

May 4 2008, 3:59 PM

Thanks David, I have made I think one or two postings, but not for some time.

It is just that I think that while meditating correctly for the appropriate time is very beneficial some people tend to think that more is better. I think that excesive periods of meditation are not necessarily advisable, certainly not without appropriate guidance.

I simply wanted to make the point as several of my friends have overdone meditation and experienced difficulties in everday life. As I said, meditating for the appropriate time should be fine. NSR is of course 15mins, sorry, got mixed up with TM !
I hope this clarifies the matter ?

btw, thanks for your honest and thoughtful answers to the questions posed on this forum.

Overmeditating

May 4 2008, 5:03 PM

John N.,

Your point about overmeditating is well taken.

Although this problem happens less for NSR than for TM, due to our care in emphasizing 15 minutes per session, even with NSR there have been rare problem situations (one or two of which have been reported previously in this forum), in which there has been residual headache and other discomfort during daily life.

Transcending, although natural and enjoyable, is very powerful, and it is not usually a good idea to keep meditating past the end of a session and risk releasing stress faster than is comfortable.

There have been many postings here on this topic in the past, but it is always good to remind ourselves about this important point.

I hope that someday soon, with the coming much increased popularity of NSR Meditation, we will be able to offer weekend Residence Courses, which will allow people with stress release issues to get rid of the stresses once and for all in an appropriate protective environment.

Thanks, David,

Some residence courses would be good !

Many of us old time TMers have happy memories of them.

How many people are learning NSR, is the message starting to get through to a larger audience ?

Keep up the good work.

Residence Courses

May 5 2008, 12:20 PM

John N.,

Yes, I, too, have many happy memories of TM Residence and Teacher Training Courses, which is one reason why I can't wait until NSR folks are ready for them. Why should we few old TMers have had all the fun?

NSR Meditation is still in its initial (no significant publicity) stage, with roughly 300-500 people a year learning through NSR/USA (hardcopy) and a similar number learning through Istituto Scientia (download).

I expect the message to get through to a larger audience when we are mentioned on national or international media, or when a celebrity discovers us. Don't worry, when the time is ready I fully expect that we will take off in a big way. Until the TM organization decides to stop alienating people (see http://www.nsrusa.org/faq.php?id=112&exp=1), we will be here to provide a viable alternative.
