effort again

Hello

Could I ask about effort and the syllable during meditation again. I know this has been covered a lot but I still not sure if I have this right.

I've just done a meditation, where after the first 30 seconds I made no effort to generate the syllable. The only thing I did was to listen out for it. Almost straight away I started going into dream like sequences, and after I while my head fell forward now and again ( fallign asleep), but I'd immeditaely bring it up again.

I realise sleep debt might be an explaination for the sleepiness, but I'm still unsure about the amount of intention required in generating the syllable. If I have no intention/effort to generate the syllable it often stops quite quickly. I know you've said the essential point about NSR meditation is no effort , and that it dosnt matter if the syllable doesnt appear but...

Thanks,
Mike

Confusion

July 8 2009, 11:49 PM

mikes101,

Unfortunately, this Forum website crashed after I replied to your posting, so that entire reply was lost (unless you happened to read it while it was up before the crash).

I will just say, briefly, that according to your description you are meditating correctly. Your confusion seems to be coming from stress release. It is important to continue to meditate twice a day, regularly, when you have times of confusion like this (most of us get them).

If you would like your meditation checked, you can always purchase an inexpensive phone or Skype consultation at http://www.nsrusa.org/order.php .

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
