I started with in the late 80's with re-edits of big tunes using reel to reel tape and razor blades. Then the first samplers arrived and the trusty old Atari running Notator. From there I went Mac and Logic and have used that ever since. These days you only need a fast Mac and Logic Audio. Most of the synths and plug ins you need are included and it sounds great.
