Logic can be a little hard to understand to begin with, trust me i know. A good beginners package is the Sony Acid range. Alot more easier to pick up and then maybe move onto more complex packages.
Just to let you know, Logic is no longer supported on the PC it is mac only. You can still pick up logic 5.1 for pc, not sure what number they are upto on the mac. I am sure our friendly mac expert will gives us more details on that
Interestingly enough, Axwell is still using 5.1 ona PC so it's quite up to scratch and easily the best one for production (even though it's very complicated at first)
I'm also an ex-Notator guy now on Logic (5.5 on the pc). Mostly midi-based with outboard gear but am gradually learning the audio side of Logic. It does take time to learn.
If you choose Logic, there are a lot of resources and message boards that can help you out. And there are various 3rd party books on logic. Emagic also made a soundcard (Audiowerk 8) which works well with logic and can be had second-hand quite cheap.
They are up to locic 7 now on mac and as you say 5.1 on pc. The best way to get sorted is (i know its not ideal and people just wanna get out there and do it) but buy magazines such as sond on sound and computer music. It helped me no end and the froums on the website for these are really helpfull too. Just find a good package and the key is to stick with it no matter what, its easy to let is swamp you down. It all unfortunatley takes time but you'll get the job done.
I am currently trying to learn it. Once you get into it, it is not to bad. Try the advice of Kris Kay. Use internet forums, and magazines. They are all quite help full.
I was sort of lucky since I started on the pre-Logic program, Notator and switched to Logic/Mac since I felt more at home with some of the edit functions. I still learn stuff now after 11 years as the program is very complex if you want it to be. It can be simple too, but you have to get someone to set up your environment properly - that is 99% of Logic. This is where you connect your synths, inputs, outputs, master fader etc. The one you get with Logic is very basic and more for hobbyists wanting to plonk a bit on the piano.
I got a poor guy in and had him setting the thing up and showing me the basics and it took about a week and a few phone calls to get it working flawlessly. Seriously guys, it is the way forward and you won't have to re-learn anything if you start with Logic.
Well if you "old" guys can learn it, so can I. And if I can't learn it by myself, I'll keep on annoying you with stupid questions and hunt you for the rest of your lives....mwhahahahaha
Let's start finding the windows version of logic first and see what I can do with it. Big thanks you all!
Id personally say familiarise yourself with express and upgrade to pro once you have mastered that. Dunno tho, worst thing to do it jump in the deep end first.
