Question for Stoney...

You mentioned in a few posts that you use your Roland JV synth a lot. I was thinking about getting one and am doing a little research on it. I found this page which showcases the presets of the Roland JV-2080: http://www.synthmania.com/jv-2080.htm
Are those all the included sounds? They aren't very impressive. Which sounds do you use mostly? Are they from an expansion or from the factory bank?

Raul,

It's not a very impressive synth by today's standards, but the sound is extremely warm and wide, which you don' get with soft synths. With some of the expansion boards, you get loads of vintage synths and organs that sound incredible. The irony is that the coolest sounds are very ugly and were meant to be super trendy in the early nineties. People laughed at their dance expansion for instance and later it had to be removed from stores as it contained samples. The 2080 is less noisy, but many agree that it's all about the 1080 - hiss and all. You can get it for peanuts these days and even though the midi is a pain in the ass, I can recommend it.

Them sounds are wide and deep, to get that from soft synths, well.. you'd be using up a hell of alot of CPU.

Im sure if they were chopped up to the detail then you could get a really deep vibe going on. Been looking around and they are cheap, i may have to look into vintage stuff now. I can imagine though the midi being a pain, well for a novice like me anyhow!

Indeed - fatter than any soft synth for pads and keyboards. The basses are crap though. It's not that hard to set up though, bit of tinkering with the input monitoring so you don't get a feedback loop or phasing. You have to record each sound to disk in order to re-edit and EQ properly, but once you've done it, the sound is great.
