Nancy Dear,
I understand your desire to be more aggressive. I think there is nothing wrong with that. I remember sitting in my RE's office, and asking her if we could be as aggressive as possible. I wasn't emotionally strong enough to continue to endure anymore. We decided to do IUI/Clomid, and when that failed I said it's time for the shots. =)
Frankly, I was nervous about them. But after going through it, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The meds are expensive. That is the "downside" to them. But, concidering you have been pregnant and ovulate on Clomid, I am guessing you'd be on a very low dose. That means less cost for you. And that's great! =)
Second, the meds are different for everyone. I have found most people use Repronex or Gonal F. Both stimulate the overies to produce many follicles. I was on 6 vials a day, that is very, very high dosage. But that was because I was a high FSH'er. My ovarian reserve (eggs) were very diminished, and it required a lot of meds for me to get only a few eggs. I highly doubt that will be your case. And that's good news for you!!!
Repronex is much cheaper than Gonal F. The typical amount at a pharmacy for Repornex is $40, the amount for Gonal F is $60. (per vial or ampule)
I started taking the shots on the 2nd day of my period.
I went in for blood work and an ultrasound after 5 days of shots. I had done so well, that they had me stop the shots and we did the HCG Trigger shot to cause me to release the eggs. Then we did IUI 36 hours later.
I also took something called "injectble lupron" that kept me from ovulating early, we didn't want my body to ovuate the many eggs I was growing prematurely. =)
I don't know if your RE would have you do that.
And finally, most of the shots are what are called
Sub Q. That means they go in the "fat" and it's a tiny needle. Very tiny. I am not lying when I say I didn't feel the shot at all!!!! It was far more worse mentally to "give myself shots" then feeling them. No pain, it was easy. =)
I encourage you to talk with your RE and your DH. Maybe you should be more aggressive. But it's costly too. But, if you and DH feehat is the next step, I encourage you to do what's comforable for the both of you. And lastly, I can give you a few sites of people who sell meds at a much cheaper rate. I had left over meds, and I sold them online for half of what I paid.
I also can tell you of a pharmacy in the UK that is also half as cheap. They require you to fax over the Rx, but it's all worth it. =)
Hope I answered all your Q's. Hang in there Nancy, my heart is going out to you.
Love Donna
