How big are they?

September 17 2002, 10:37 AM

Hi!

From what I have been told, the average or good follicle should be between 17mm-21 something. I had a very huge follicle on my right side that was almost 22mm. I was worried as well it would be too big. My RE said that I had 3 on my left side that were 17mm, and then that huge one on my right. I asked her the same question you are wondering about. She told me, that if they get too big, like over 23mm (I think) they won't rupture sometimes, instead they turn into a luteal cyst and disolve.

That is why it's important to have an ultrasound before each cycle of clomid. Because if you have any folliciles that didn't ruputre, and did turn into cysts they can be exaserbated by taking clomid again.

I would ask your RE what size the follices were and direct your question to her or him. =)

Take care and Gooooood luck!

Love Donna

I am actually asking for someone else. I was on clomid last year (now I have a beautiful little girl)and I thought that follicles could get to big.

Her dr. put her on clomid because she has fluid/ cyst --something like that and wanted her to get pg right away to help this. As far as I know she has had no ultrasound. I wondered about big follicles because she does not need to be on clomid to concieve. She got pg with child one without trying. So I thought for someone that could normally conceive without help, might actually make her get big follices and not conceive. She was on 50mg and just got aunt flow.

Thank you
Sheri

This could be dangerous I think....

From my opinion, your friend should maybe get a second opinion. Being on clomid to treat a cyst doesn't seem like a good idea at all. When you look up clomid in the nursing PDR or drug hand book, it mentions it is contraindicated (shouldn't be used) in persons who have cyts!! I think if anything, it is worth passing on this information to your friend. If I were here, I would strongly recommend talking with another doctor about the appropriate uses of Clomid.

There is a web site called "sharedjourney.com" and there is a doctor who you can email questions to. He's a specialist (and RE) and I think he might shed some light onto this.

Take care!

Donna

Ps: Awesome to hear about your daughter from clomid!

Hello from the cyst queen

Hi Sheri,

Congrats on your success with Clomid. I love hearing about how it can work!

As for your friend, if she has a cyst when she starts Clomid it could get worse. In fact, they are supposed to do an u/s to tell if there are any left over cysts and then hold off until they are gone. It can be very dangerous to use the Clomid when you already have a cyst. It can get bigger and potentially rupture.

My understanding is pretty much the same as Donna's. 17-22mm or 1.7-2.2cm is the ideal size. Any bigger and they are considered "overcooked" by some. I have custs on a consistent basis. I can feel when I have them. They generally will go away by the time af rolls around though.

Hope this helped. Please feel free to invite your friend to join the board. Lots of wonderful women here.

Take care and enjoy that baby!!
Rhonda
