"TOW" actually stands for Tube-launched, Optically Tracked, Wire Guided. The missile is attached to a thin strand of wire, which stays connected and un-spools, for the entire flight from launcher to target. The operator keeps the sight aimed at the target while the missile is in flight, and guidance corrections are automatically sent down the wire to steer the missile.
