Response to More on Katrina

In 2000, I worked in Amsterdam for several months. From the sounds of your post, it sounds like you've spent a bit of time over there too. Hoe gaat het met jou?

If memory serves, my workplace was something like 60 feet below sea level.

Yes, we could definitely learn a lot from the Dutch, and hopefully we'll be getting some good input from them during the reconstruction. With so much to rebuild, it might as well be done right this time, instead of attempting to reconstruct the makeshift efforts of the past few centuries.

For what it's worth, that North Sea can really get your attention sometimes.

I'm tempted to crack a joke about a little Dutch boy with his finger in the dike, but I've got a hunch it would fall flat. As well it should, under the circumstances.

For those who don't know, Holland's real name is Nederland, which means "low country." And there are actually two Hollands (North and South), but that's probably more than anyone wants to know just now.

Hmmmmm ... maybe throw in a few canals at the same time? It seems to work just dandy over there!

Goedenacht.

P.S. They DO have occasional flooding, but it's usually fairly mild and confined.
