Some additional trivia about the movie..
The U.S. Navy allowed the use of 19 ships.
William Holden learned how to taxi a fighter on the deck of an aircraft carrier.
The shipboard scenes were filmed on the U.S.S. Oriskany, as Flt Tech said. The number CV-34 is supposed to be visible on the bow in some shots.
The aircraft the squadron flies is the Grumman F9F-2 Panther. (And no, Flt Tech, I didn't know that...)
After author James Michener was aboard the USS Essex, he wrote the story. Supposedly, one of the pilots aboard the Essex at the time was Neil Armstrong.
