"U.S. Sends Marines to South Vietnam

1965: South Vietnam requests two U.S. Marine battalions to sure up security at the Da Nang air base. This will effectively free up some of the South Vietnamese for combat. The White House agreed to the request and sent Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu, chief of the armed forces, 3,500 U.S. Marines"

Thank you, Vietnam Veterans!
