Response to Thanks, Seabat
I knew before I went on the Ship’s Store web page that I could order by phone.
I use to have an American Express Gold Card which I used for many years in business and for personal purchases. It became a slight problem in the latter years using that card due to the fact AMEX was becoming slow to pay the dealers and their discount rates higher than other cards like Visa and Master Card. It became common for me to ask the company I was visiting “Do you take American Express” before I attempted to made a purchase. Many of my spur of the moment or would be purchases were aborted because they didn’t accept that card. I didn’t abort the purchase for the denial of the card, but because it gave me the time to reflect on the purchase a bit. Often I decided I really didn’t need that item as much as I first thought. I used that card because it had a monthly pay off and no time payment allowed which helped me stay within my budget. I had other cards which I could use if I needed and at times did.
This message is not about how I pay or purchase things, but to make a point. I went on the website to make some purchases for two grand kids whose birthdays are about to come up. When I found credit cards were not accepted at the website I had second thoughts about where and what I would get for those grand kids.
Likely the Board of Directors decided not to accept credit cards after looking at the costs. I’m not sure they looked at the possibility of losing sales like I just described. Previously it was so easy to do that I always ended up adding items I really had not intended to get by just adding a small “X” in the block. More of those spur of the moment things.
Surely there are pros and cons concerning this, but was due diligence of them made in this case? Those “Spur of the moment” purchases may have overcome the usual slight two or three percent charge of occasionally someone using the card. When you have that captive audience already in the sales area you should use all of your faculties at hand to make that sale. Without the credit/debit card use available on the website, in my opinion, you miss some good spur of the moment sales. I don’t believe my recent one is the only one lost.
