Isn't this what they did in WW2 to help ward off the German subs? Seems as if they could have destroyer escorts front, rear, and sides and that they could do a good job of protecting a group of cargo ships in a long line. Radar should help give plenty of early warning of attacks. I would suggest that this duty could be shared by many of the nations involved and needing protection of their ships.
