Dark and scary

I ventured into snipe's country once.
It was a dark and scary place.
Valves, gages and pipes everywhere.
The smell of diesel and machinery was ever present.
The deck would rattle with every step as if to say
"intruder alert".
As I walked between the sleeping giant engines I could feel the awesome power. It was like walking by a pair of sleeping lions and trying not to awaken them.
Shaft alley appeared to be a tunnel to nowhere that only the bravest dare to enter.
The bilge resembled a black hole where if things went in they never came out.
I felt uneasy, like the feeling you get in an old empty house and it seems like spirits from the past are just behind your every step raising goose bumps. I did not tarry long.
I went back up the ladder into more familiar fresh air and sunshine.
Those spaces are best left to the qualified and the brave.
