1179 class LST's did not "County" in the Name. (ie. Peoria was USS PEORIA LST1183 and the Schenectady was the USS Schenectady (LST 1185) etc.) WE could get 25 knots out of them with a 'clean bottom'and all six mains on the line. Watch the 'Economy Haze' as we kick up our heels.
In storms and typhoons they rode almost as poorly as the original LST's with the really flat bottoms. Unfortunately the support systems envisioned for these fast LST's was never developed beyond the drawing boards and the DOD and the Clinton administration killed the LST in favor of civilian ships. I have yet to see a civilian ship do a high speed run near the LOD offloading AmTracs and then doing a 270 degree loop and beach as the LVT's made it to the beach.
