Response to Slight correction

The LST 1180 was just the USS Manitowoc It did not have county in the name.

By the way, we also set the world record for amphibious speed.
We Left DaNang headed for the USA and kept 5 engines on line taking them down one at a time for maintenance and then putting them back online. The record still holds today.
At the price of fuel, I don't think it will be broken.
The skipper did it to prove a point.
In the past the fleet either had to convoy at 10 knots so the LST's could keep up, or the LST's left early and the fleet usually passed them. This made the LST a sitting duck for subs.
The skipper wanted to prove that the fleet no longer had to wait on the amphibs and we could keep up with them.
