Match Report: "Despite missing a few players out injured/away Maple started brightly into this friendly game and some neat probing play saw Gibbons coolly tuck away his 1st chance to make it 1-0. Further good play from the midfield saw Lycett cross well for Homer to strike the 2nd.
Barclays then came back into the game but alert defending and goalkeeping kept Barlcays at bay until half time. The 2nd half saw Maple on the back foot more and pressure began to mount in the Maple box before 2 quick well taken goals from the opposition - though sloppy defensively, leading up to them.
Credit to Maple, they kept probing and counter attacking - Homer forcing the gk into 2 fine saves before neatly finishing to make it 3-2. The Maple midfield - despite constant changes played simply and effectively with new guy Jon and old head Lewis getting their tackles in, pressuring their opponents and setting up the Maple attacks.
A fine Lycett lob made it 4-2 before Barclays missed a couple of easy close-range chances, and later saw them rein in some long range shots and deep crosses. At the death Shingles pulled off his marker at the back post, anticipated the play, and finished with a Shearer-like rasper into the far corner to wrap things up for a deserved victory against their Division 1 opponents".

good performance...
August 19 2005, 11:36 AM
On behalf of last nights injured players/supporters...
Excellent no nonsense defending, solid midfield play & some clinical finishing up front capped a good all round performance from Maple against a much higher division team. Keeping tight to the opposition, getting stuck in & keeping it simple proved to be the answer to defeating a much more capable side who were kept very quiet on the night.
Noted performances from the centre halves who dominated the oppositions forwards throughout and good to see Ed looking sharp too.
Hopefully we can take confidence from this performance into the next 2 friendlies and on into the new season!
Up the mighty Leaf!

Cresconians 5 - 5 Maple Leaf (friendly game)
August 21 2005, 2:19 PM
A pre-season friendly vs Div 7 side Cresconians at their home pitch. Roll-on, roll-off subs.
Match Report: "Much time has passed since this game was played and memories are somewhat clouded - so here's what I can recall...
An enjoyable game of football to watch on a hot sunny day - Maple scored some well-taken goals - and conceded some through dodgy defending, though a hardworking performance throughout - especially with players out of their natural positions for some of the game, along with several players unavailable to play.
Maple goals - A huge gk Jon goal kick sent Eddie through to finish smartly with a half-volley from 20yards, followed by another fine Homer strike later on. A deflected goal after good approach play was the 3rd. Varley scored a near post top corner screamer from right-mid position (which he excelled in this problem position), with the Mighty Bob chipping in with yet another calmly taken goal when through on the goal with just the gk to beat.
Crescs goals - poor defending and a dodgy off-side decision for 3 of the goals, a very well worked and neat finish for 1, and alarmingly the 5th came from a free header from a corner with Bob being assigned to mark the tallest player on the pitch. Once again poor communication from the goalie and hesitation from the defence due to it did cause problems for Maple throughout the game - though gk Jon did make 2 astounding saves despite injuring his hand mid way through the game.
Good to see the midfield match their opponents and create chances too - as well as top fitness levels from most of them. The ball going over Maple's defenders heads and no-one anticipating or communicating this was a problem which'll need addressing soon - but individually were in the main quite resolute. FOrward wise, if Eddie is to frop deep to collect the ball then the other forward needs to stand on the last defenders shoulder for any through ball - this'll need to be worked on quickly too with the season so near - but promising stuff overall."

v Cresconians
August 21 2005, 4:55 PM
Regarding Eddie's forward position, it has been confirmed by Management that he will be standing 'on' the last defender as he did with first goal against Cresconians.
Therefore the midfield and other attacker will have to start winning 'flick-ons'.
Good game v cresc
Long ball game started when tiredness crept into some legs.
Communication a problem (as always).
Nice to know we have a coach in Homer for pre-match talks in new season

Amblecote 3 - 4 Maple Leaf
August 26 2005, 12:03 AM
A pre-season friendly match vs West Midlands Christian League Division side Amblecote, played on The Bogs pitches, nr Mary Stevens Park.
Match Report: "A severely depleted and cobbled together Maple side with no subs took time to settle into this match. Last ditch defending and good keeping kept the scores 0-0 for a while as Maple players got to grips with playing in new positions.
Eventually Amblecote did force the opener - slow reactions and hesitation saw their forward 1st to the ball who went onto round Evans for 1-0. Maple then started to apply a little pressure of their own with Homer just blazing over in the penalty area. The score was soon 1-1 though as Kirby rose to head in from a whipped Kettle corner.
Maple then went 2-1 behind, conceding a headed goal from a set-piece - which Amblecote's play probably deserved overall. At half time it seemed there was much to sort out and Maple could only get better in the 2nd half. Fotunately Maple had more belief and steel in the remainder of the game - a fine Lycett cross into the danger area was smashed home by an unfortunate Amblecote defender to tie the scores.
At this point Maple became more relaxed in possession and began to probe some openings - and some solid defending kept the Amblecote forwards quiet at the other end, with any forays dealt with by the impressive gk Evans. Maple went on to take the lead through Varley - depsite being fouled in the Amblecote box, kept on his feet, turned his man and shot low into the near corner for a very well-taken goal.
A scramble in the same penalty area minutes later saw the ball fall to Kettle who bundled the ball home after good play from Lycett and Homer. Tired legs, and no subs saw Maple fade in the final few minutes and Amblecote had the majority of the possession - and in the Maple defensive half. Again rugged defending kept them at bay with Evans orgainsing the defence well and quick to sweep up behind them. Amblecote scored their 3rd from the penalty spot after Asante-Boakye was adjudged to have pulled back a forward player as a cross came in - which set up a nervous final few minutes - of which Maple played out well.
Overall, a dogged performance - though patchy in creating chances it's good to see that Maple took the few that were on offer - and good to see resolute defending and good communcation. Hopefully the attitude and displays from the friendly games so far will be taken into the 1st league game on Saturday 3rd September..."

Amblecote friendly...
August 26 2005, 10:15 AM
Once again on behalf of the spectators/injured players watching...
Despite a very shaky/disjointed performance in the first half that seemed to lack much organisation - good to see Maple keep the oppositions chances to a minimum & then pull themselves together after a constructive half time chat.
Special mentions go to Evans for a confident display between the sticks again, Gaz for some excellent defending and keeping Amblecotes most useful player pretty quiet & Bob for running his little ginger socks off!!
Once again it was proved that what it takes to win games at this level is solid no nonsense defending, getting tight & competitive in the midfield combined with the team keeping it's shape & taking the chances in front of goal - even against teams who are supposedly playing at a higher standard. For the 3rd successive game (2nd half anyway!) it was great to see Maple doing all of the above!
An excellent 2nd half despite the fact there were many players mssing, people forced to play out of position (chin up Barn!!)& no subs. Overall one of the most useful pre seasons we've had so roll on the new season!
Good performance lads.

Amblecote Friendly
August 26 2005, 11:14 AM
Couldn't agree with Lawro more... Another good, battling display despite 11 players having to play for the full 90(+++) minutes.
Confidence grew after the first 15 minutes and no doubt the team (and spectators) all benefited from having a commanding keeper. Many players also kept on going when absolutely shattered to see the game end with a deserved result.
Some good quality football was played too and the team should move forwards into the new season with a positive attitude and hope for more of the same when the League starts.

Maple Leaf 3 - 2 Wulfrun Invicta
September 4 2005, 10:50 AM
Team:
------------------ Gater
Walker - Millership - Hillyer - Kettle G
Campbell - Lewis ----- Kirby --- Lycett
------------ Homer --- Kettle A
Subs: West for Lewis, Gibbons for Campbell.
Captain: Lewis, then West.
Man of The Match: Kirby.
Manager: Sadler.
Match Report: "Only 13 of the 21-man playing squad were available to play - with many of them carrying knocks and niggles and being short of match fitness, on a very hard and worryingly uneven pitch with high temperatures testing Maple's resolve.
Maple started quite well and put together some neat passages of play and equalled their opponent's thirst for the game, and were unluck to go 1-0 down after a long ball was deflected out wide past the Maple defence for their forward to finish smartly lobbing the advancing gk Gater. The score was soon 1-1 after a great cross into the Wulfrun box resulted in a push on Lycett - with Kettle A coolly tucking away the resulting spot-kick.
Soon after Maple were behind again after a slight delfection from another long high ball caught out the centre-backs for an assured finish from a Wulfrun forward. At this point Maple began to press the opposition back into their own half and came up with some neat passing football resulting in several great crosses into the box and some near misses - a Homer 30 yard screamer narrowly going wide, and Lewis going close a few times. It was 2-2 when one such cross found Lycett ghosting into the 6-yard box as he does so well from out wide to restore justice.
A couple of injuries to Lewis (early on) and Campbell saw Maple forced into reshuffles - but were still playing well and creating pressure throughout, as well as dogged defending and cancelling out the Wulfrun midfield. Most of Wulfrun's potent attacks came from set-pieces - and went onto hit the post and then the crossbar mid-way through the 2nd half. Just after that, a limping Lycett stole into the opponent's penalty area, and although miskicked his 'shot' somewhat - the uneven ground saw his bouncing 'shot' trickle past the unfortunate Wulfrun gk to make it 3-2.
Despite some pressure late on in the game with Wulfrun ofet pushing 6 players upfront Maple held on for a hard-fought victory - with even more players picking up knocks throughout the game and soldiering on regardless. Hopefully these will clear up and more players will return form holiday/injuries to give Maple more possibilities. It was good to see a resolute Maple display with passion and guile - whilst still creating chances through good slick passing and putting their opponents' defence under pressure."

Vs Wulfrun
September 4 2005, 12:41 PM
Despite a depleted squad EVERYONE still fought to establish a place in the first 11.
Some of the passing (despite a bobbly pitch)was a treat to watch and had the opposition all over the place. Let's do this every week please!
Also calling for the ball was much better. Gaz and Matt could be heard for every ariel ball(is that spelt right?)
Thumbs up to Jon in goal as well. For the first time in a match he was calling 'keepers'. This let our defence know exactly the situation with any balls over the top. Can still be better Jon but made a hell of a difference at the back-nice one.
Think the warm-up (despite Graham and Sam's dissaproval) made a difference as well. we were up for it from the starting whistle and didn't stop until the final whistle.
With an increase in overall fitness levels coming with every game and decent traing on Thurs, things looking good for the season.

Real Riverside 2 - 4 Maple Leaf
September 11 2005, 1:04 AM
Team:-
------------------ Gater
- Walker - Hillyer -- Millership - Kettle G
- Campbell -- Warr ----- Kirby ----- Lycett
------------ Homer ---- Kettle A
Subs: Glover for Lycett, West for Homer.
Unused Subs: Lewis, Asante-Boakye.
Captain: Kirby.
Man of the Match: Kettle A.
Match Report: "Wet and slippery conditions made for an entertaining start to the game with end-to-end football early on. Maple were probing their opponents defence with several flick ons and one-two's before a flicked Homer header set Kettle A. free of the defence for a fine lobbed goal from around 25 yards out.
Maple made it 2-0 after good work from the left flank saw Kettle A slide in to meet a whipped-in cross. Lycett nearly made it 3 not long after - but was denied by a fine save low down by the Real gk. Maple seemed to be running through on goal at will - with only several belated off-side calls and bizarre refereeing keeping them from the Real goalmouth.
Riverside came into the game shortly after and applied some pressure on the Maple defence - pulling a goal back through a failed clearence in which a Real forward stole in the penalty area and neatly finished from close range. Maple then restored their 2 goal cushion - more great crossing from the left side, this time a deep cross met by the soaring Warr for a fine headed goal.
Shortly before half-time however the scoreline became 3-2 as a Real midfielder stole in on a half clearence, and despite their being plenty of Maple players around, he manged to meet the ball first and slot home coolly from the edge of the penalty area.
In a second half which saw Riverside have more possession than the first, and Maple Leaf began counterattacking more - the game opened up, with both teams demonstarting good approach play. Another quality cross from out wide saw Homer rise to nod in for 4-2, which was a fair scoreline overall.
It was good to see another committed Maple performance - with some crunching tackles when needed, and some neat and probing attacking play. A resolute back-line, supplying early quality passes into the midfield and forwards is always welcome & effective, and once again the new Kettle/Homer forward partnership looked threatening. Some whipped crossing from out wide help put the opposition under pressure, and often resulted with Maple gaining possession high up the pitch. Hopefully the good form will continue into next week."

Vs Real Riverside.
September 12 2005, 3:51 PM
On behalf of the spectators/injured players - another good performance & result fellas!
A fine first half display of swift attacking football with some clinical finishing combined with a solid battling performance in the second half ensured a deserved victory in tricky conditions. Despite a few shaky moments defensively just before half time Maple tightened up as a team for the second half to limit the opposition to very few chances to get back in the game. An assured performance which hopefully can be carried into the next match.
Real positives to be taken from the solid (mostly fair!) challenges all over the pitch, simple passing & quality crossing to set up numerous attacks. Plus the Eddie/Alex striking axis seems to be a good combination of target man & pace.
Keep it up!!!

Maple Leaf 5 - 0 Old Wulfrunians
September 19 2005, 1:05 AM
Team:
------------------- Gater
- Walker - Hillyer -- Millership - Kettle G
- Campbell - Warr ----- Kirby ----- Lycett
------------ Homer ---- Kettle A
Subs: Varley for Campbell, Lewis for Homer, Asante-Boakye for Lycett.
Unused Sub: West.
Captain: Kirby.
Man of The Match: Kettle G.
Match Report: "The first 20 minutes of this game were probably the worst and most bizarre Maple have played for a few years - and really should have been trailing by 3 or 4 goals. No communication, poor defensive play (not just from the backline) and a care-free attitude went unpunished by a Wulfrunians side who started well and had several good chances to win the game early on.
Fortunately for Maple, 2 quick goals - a long range shot which took a slight deflection and a headed goal from close range - both from Kettle A, saw Maple settle down and begin to assert themselves in the game. A sweetly struck 3rd goal from Kettle A just before half-time gave Maple an undeserved lead overall - though it was pleasing to see that Maple did not fall apart under the early pressure, and eventually play their way back into the game.
The 2nd half was a relatively even encounter - with Maple having the luxury of sitting back and trying to catch out Wulfs on the counter-attack. Lycett made it 4-0 with a sublime 25yard chip into the far corner, before several solid and brave blocks from Maple's defence ensured the possibility of a clean sheet - and somewhat denying Old Wulfs a few deserved goals.
Lewis, on as sub, made an intelligent run to be fed through on goal by Lycett, held off the challenges of the Wulfs defenders before knocking the ball back into the path of the advancing Kettle A - who guided the ball low past the gk for his 4th of the afternoon.
Overall, should Maple ever start a match again as ineptly as they did in this one they would be SO very lucky not to be several goals down within minutes - a more competitive and error-free start is needed from the very first whistle and throughout the game. It was pleasing to see that once again there was a strong bench to choose quality replacements from - giving the manager more possibilities and alternative options.
Comedy Moment - some kids watching the game accusing a big-boned Wulfs player of 'having never seen a salad'."
Thanks to 'Left Foot Wand' for pointing out previous errors in this match report.

Wylde Green Wanderers 3 - 2 Maple Leaf
September 26 2005, 10:51 AM
Team:
---------------- Shingles
- Walker - Hillyer --- Randle - Kettle G
- Varley -- Lewis ----- Kirby --- West -
--------- Campbell ---- Homer
Sub: Gibbons for West.
Man of the Match: Hillyer.
Manager: Sadler.
Thanks to Mitch, Gary and Homer for coming and cheering Maple on.
Match Report: "Once again Maple shot themselves in the foot early on and were 3-0 down after 30 minutes through sloppy play all around - leaving players unmarked in the box and missed chances to clear the danger accounting for the 3 goals conceded. Worryingly, it looked like every time Maple lost possession fo the ball Wylde Green would score - and Maple did not keep the ball well at all...
Fortunately Maple did find some resolve and pulled a goal back from a determined West - anticipating the play, taking a chance and stealing into the Wlyde Green box to score with a deflected near-post shot. Minutes later Maple pulled another back through a converted Homer penalty.
The 2nd half saw Maple put pressure on their opponents and most of the play was in the Wylde Green half - unfortunately a mixture of sloppy control, passing and finishing - coupled with determined Wylde Green defending - prevented Maple from getting a deserved equaliser. A foul on Campbell in the box saw the resulting Homer penalty missed, and though sub Gibbons proved a thorn in the opposition side and was involved in some fine crossing moves, Maple could just not equalise.
Late on the opposition were reduced to 10 men (dissent) - though with several bad tackles from both teams it was surprising that 21 players remained on the pitch.
Sadly, too few players came out of this game with any credit - too many Maple players had an 'off day', were not up for the physical nature of the game, or decision making was poor. With numbers soon returning to bolster the team selection options places are well and truely up for grabs - regardless of individual player egos."

Elmdon Athletic 5 - 2 Maple Leaf
October 2 2005, 12:12 PM
Team:
-------------- Gater
- Boakye - Kirby -- Hillyer - Kettle G
- Varley - Randle -- Lewis -- Lycett
---------- Homer -- Kettle A
Sub: Gibbons for Boakye.
Man of the Match: tba.
Many thanks to P Homer for coming and running the line again, and delivering a mighty fine half-time teamtalk. Also a big-up to Barney - who despite being injured and in some pain - came to watch, cheered Maple on and video'd the match.
Match Report: "Maple started brightly and matched their quality opponents in the opening encounters of the game. Unfortunately a lapse at a set-piece saw an Elmdon forward convert a simple header from a good cross out wide. Despite being on the back foot Maple battled their way back into the game and a good pull-back from Varley saw Randle powerfully head in for a deserved equaliser.
Elmdon then applied more pressure on the Maple goal, though Maple resiliantly weathered this, and began to start to play some quality counter attacking football. Through this, Maple took the lead through a rebound from a missed Kettle A penalty (several Maple players following up afte the initial penalty shot was well saved) - converted by a diving-in Lewis.
Unfortunately a gk handling error soon after led to an Elmdon equaliser, before a hole on the right side of defence caused confusion and enabled Elmdon to take the lead soon after. At this point Maple heads went down a little - but continued to try and take the game to them and very nearly equalised through Varley - whose deflected effort grazed the crossbar.
With minutes remaining and the game stretched with Maple pushing forward 2 more goals were conceded - although individual errors led to them it was good to see a now tired Maple still trying to salvage the game.
It's safe to say that Elmdon are the best team Maple have faced so far - and judging by their results to date will be one of the favourites to win promotion this season. Haivng said this Maple matched them in the main throughout, gave a good acount of themselves, battled well and could have had the 3 points if not for a couple of lapses of concentration, and lacking in options on the bench.
Hopefully, next week will see the same resolve displayed today - and if so Maple should get a result..."

Aston Youth 4 - 0 Maple Leaf
October 9 2005, 11:12 PM
Team:
-------------- Sadler
- Asante - Kirby -- Hillyer - Kettle G
- Gibbons - Lewis --- Warr -- Lycett
----------- Homer -- Kettle A
Sub: West for Gibbons.
Man of The Match: tba.
Thanks to Mitch for coming and cheering Maple on, and in the 2nd half running the line in appalling weather (and game!)
Match Report: "Maple went 1-0 down early on - an Aston forward bundling through 2 Maple players to head in from close range from a corner. The score was soon 2-0 after a long range fizzed shot skimmed through gk Sadler's gloves on the wet turf.
Aston were then soon reduced to 10 men for their right back headbutting Lycett and proceeding to kick him whilst he lay on the floor. Unfortunately before Maple could capitalise on the man advantage the score became 3-0 - a fine shot into the near top corner. To make matters even worse, just before half-time the score was 4-0 with the Aston no.10 leading the Maple defence a merry dance and slotting home from close range.
The 2nd half saw Maple come more into the game - there were passages of passing the ball to each other, keeping possession and probing their opponents - but this was far too little, far too late - and not enough.
Homer went close with a header, Kettle A fizzed a shot narrowly over the bar - but overall Maple were 2nd best everywhere - despite the one man advantage. It was pleasing to see no more goals conceded in the 2nd half, though there were half chances for both sides.
If Maple wish to finish in a promotion place come the end of the season the overall passion and determination must improve - as well as the passing, movement and incisiveness, which was sorely lacking on a decent pitch.
Onwards and upwards for next week - with hopefully more players returning to bolster numbers comptition for places should intensify - with fewer people resting on their laurels and going through the motions."

Old Wulfs 0 - 5 Maple Leaf
October 16 2005, 11:09 PM
Team:
---------------- Gater
- Kirby - Hillyer -- Millership - Asante
Gibbons -- Lewis ----- Warr ----- Lycett
----------- Glover -- Homer
Subs: Walker for Hillyer, Fisher for Glover.
Man of the Match: Lycett.
Thanks to Mitchell, Campbell, P Homer, Shing & Rico for coming and cheering Maple on.
Match Report: "An untidy though competitive start from both teams saw few goalscoring chances early on. Set-pieces seemed to be most likely way of opening the scoreline, and it was Jon Warr - winning yet another flickon from a throw-in or set-piece out wide, who opened the scoring - a looped glancing header from Lycett's cross making it 1-0 to Maple.
Old Wulfs then went close themselves - twice hitting the post (though one was a Millership 'clearence'!)" Just before halftime Maple were denied a penalty when Glover raced through on goal and was felled from behind - the ref waving play on.
The 2nd half saw Maple relax and upped the quality of their passing and approach play. Lycett was seeing a lot of the ball out wide - and it was his cross that put in Homer for his 1st of the afternoon - neat control with a fine finish. Another Lycett pass gave Homer his 2nd of the match - with a smart strike leaving the opposing gk no chance.
Homer then completed his hattrick, from good interplay out wide right - Gibbons playing in Warr who floated a superb cross to Homer, who finished with a fine left foot volley into the far top corner of the goal - capping off a fine performance from the Maple no9. Lycett turned provider once more for Maple's 5th, playing in substitute Fisher who finished calmly on his season debut.
In between the Maple goals were some resolute defending, good shielding and approach play from the midfield - especially tireless running and tackling from the centre-mids, and a dangerous frontline - all sadly missing in various combinations in the past couple of games. The amount of tackles won and accurate passes in this game was commendable after recent matches.
It goes to show that when Maple are focused and committed to the game, and battle for the ball and possession EARLY ON in the match that they can be a match for most teams. A solid and enjoyable TEAM performance - even those who did not see much of the ball affected the game with their positioning and off the ball running.
The 5-0 scoreline was harsh on Old Wulfs, who came close on a few occasions, and did test the Maple defence throughout. Having said that, it was good to see Maple put the game out of reach after going into the lead, and kept on probing for more goals throughout the match.
Hopefully this will continue into next week's match - despite the enforced changes to the team that will occur."

Crusaders 10 - 2 Maple Leaf
October 23 2005, 12:40 AM
Team:-
------------------- Gater
- Asante -- Millership -- Hillyer -- Kettle G
- Varley ---- Randle ----- Kirby ---- Lycett
-------------- Homer ---- Gibbons
Subs: none
Thanks to Ade, Mitch, Fisher and Rob for coming and cheering Maple on from the sidelines.
Man of the Match: none.
Match Report: "The inability to mark one good opposing forward out of the game cost Maple dear today - coupled with ineptitude, a lack of passion and plenty of basic footballing errors from Maple all over the pitch.
Passes across Maple's own penalty box, letting opponents run off their markers, lack of communicaction, and the inability to make a tackle or simple pass all helped a poor Crusaders team to ten goals and an easy victory without too much hassle.
Maple's goals came from a Kirby header after a fine delivery from Lycett at a corner, and Homer scoring a soft - yet on target - freekick goal from out wide.
Worryingly, the Maple plyers seemed to give up after conceding 5-6 goals - no pride or determination to stop the game from becoming the rout it eventually did. Not one Maple player should come off the pitch from this game and reckon they gave it their all and did ok - let alone doing well.
Hopefully more of Maple's injured / unavailable players will return for next week's game and vye for places. Time on the bench or not making the 14-player squad for games may make players think twice before giving such an inept and spiritless performance again. This goes not only for the fringe players - but for the more senior players who let themselves and Maple down too."
A good natured game in which Maple will have left feeling like they've lost rather than picking up a point. The first half started brightly for Maple, with none of the shakiness that has plagued them for the first 20 mins of virtually every game this season - some fine passing and dogged tackling resulting in most of the play being in the Riverside half. After 20 minutes or so the goals started coming thick and fast - a well struck free kick gave Riverside the lead against the run of play but was quickly equalised by the impressive Homer(P). Riverside took the lead again after an error from Gater in the Maple goal - but again Maple struck back quickly through Homer(P). Maple finally took the lead with 5 minutes to go in the half with HomerI(P) completing his hat trick with a fine looping shot from the corner of the area. Maple went into the break 3-2 up, thoroughly deserving the lead.
The second half started badly for Maple with Riverside scoring after another keeper error, but undaunted Maple fought back with a scrambled goal from a Lycett corner - with the battling Warr getting the final touch. Maple played some excellent football this half, with the defence solid and the ball rarely coming out of the Riverside half. Unfortunately one of the rare occasions the ball did come out of the Riverside half resulted in a goal from the corner of the area - Gater beaten by an awkward bounce - taking the game to 4-4. Maple kept pressing but a winner wouldn't come and were eventually lucky to come away with a point with Walker and Gater combining to deny a Riverside player from 3 yards out.
All in all a good performance from the team, in particular centre midfield, and a nice response to the tough match the previous week. Again there were 11 players with no subs which is a shame for a team with as large squad as Maple.
Big thanks to Mitchell for supporting and running the line.

Maple Leaf 2 - 2 Meriden Athletic
November 13 2005, 12:39 AM
Team:
---------------- Homer P
- Asante - Hillyer -- Millership - Kettle G
- Campbell - Warr ---- Kettle A --- Lycett
---------- Homer E --- Fisher
Subs: Brett for Fisher, Randle for Asante-B, Gibbons for Lycett.
Man of the Match: tba.
Many thanks to Mitch, Ade, Shing, Ric, Nick for coming and cheering Maple on from the sidelines.
Match Report: "Maple mustered out 14 players for this match today; which was pleasing to see that there was a full bench of options to choose from - especially as there are so many mid-long term injuries/absantees in the squad.
Meriden took a very early lead - a massive gk kick down field cleared a rather surprised and static Maple back-line for ex-Maple player Ian 'Splitter' Willetts to score.
The game was then mainly played in the centre of pitch for long periods as both teams battled it out for possession of the ball - both hoping to create pressure in the boggy pitch - which was cutting up quickly, making quality passing difficult.
Maple came back into the game and equalised through a scrappy though persistant phase of play from Homer E - calmly poking the ball home under pressure. Soon after another good chance was superbly saved by the Meriden gk when it looked certain Maple would score.
Meriden were then awarded a penalty minutes later - a somewhat unfortunate decision as Millership had looked to have won the ball cleanly had had put the ball out for a corner. All said and done Meriden scored it to make to 2-1, and perhaps justice was done minutes later whn Hillyer DID look to have bought down a Meriden player in the box, but the ref waved play on.
Shortly before halftime Maple were applying constant pressure in the Meriden half, and were rewarded for their efforts when good chasing down and anticipation from the midfield say an error in the Meriden defence and for Campbell to steal in and equalise.
The 2nd half saw a few half chances for both teams, with Maple perhaps shading possession and creating good opportunities. Brave and solid keeping from Homer P thwarted Meriden when they countered - rounding off a much welcome display from the Maple no1.
Tired legs and the heavy pitch took it's toll late, and Maple tohugh Maple carried on probing to the end they could just not force a winner. A draw was probably a fair result, and with so many Maple players to come back - hopefully soon - and if the attitude and battling performance displayed today can be taken on into the rmeainiing matches Maple should ensure a mid-top half finish in the league.
A solid all round team performance today - with Warr leading by example and setting the tone with his non-stop doggedness and determination to win the ball, as well as setting up several phases of attacking play, in what were difficult conditions."

Match Report: "It should be noted that Maple have been undergoing something of an injury crisis throughout the season so far - along with several others being 'unable' to play or come to support the team on. Given the improving quality and depth in the squad it is admirable that Maple have managed to get the results they have acheived so far this season.
It really has been a case of the remaining hands to the pumps - with several players playing out of their preferred positions for some time now - though still giving their all.
Onto the game...
A new home ground - with pitch and changing rooms in a refreshingly welcome condition was put to good use by a determined, though depleted, Maple side.
Maple started brightly and were dogged in the challenge, as well as creating and probing for chances on goal. A few half-chances were being carved out for Maple and on 4/5 occcasions they could have taken the lead.
However, shortly before halftime possession was given away cheaply and Crusaders took the lead with a fine lobbed effort from their forward - their only real chance of the game so far.
After half-time Maple upped the tempo of the game and began to exert some real constant pressure in their opponents half. Again a few half chances were spurned, before the spritely Brett got hold of the ball and unleashed a pinpointshot for Maple to equalise.
Again Maple created chances, the probing and relentless Campbell always looking to get on the end of things and link up the play being involved with several phases of play - along with the impressive Brett.
Brett, obviously inspired by Arsenal's Henry shot Maple into a 2-1 lead around 70mins in - drifting in from the left flank he beat his full-back, then a midifelder and centre-back before unleashing an accurate shot into the far corner.
Still Maple pushed forward and created chances - ably protected by resolute and aware defending against the counter-attacking play of Crusaders. Maple's midfield were bossing the game - not ltting the oppostion setlle and create chances themselves.
With just a few minutes remaining an opportune weak long range effort eluded the Maple gk for an equaliser - something which has become all to apparent in many games this season, and has cost a fair few points.
The result was harsh on Maple who looked the only team intersted in winning the game - especially impressive after such a turnaround from when the 2 teams met earlier this season.
NEXT GAME - Maple will need everyone able to play to be available next week - more players are injured / unavailable and the squad, as it stands, are litterally down to the bare bones.
If Maple are to get a top-half finsih this season these are the games which will this possibility will be decided upon."

Man of the Match: TBC
Maple Leaf started fairly brightly in this game, creating several good chances with some nice football which unfortunately weren't converted. As the first half progressed Maple Leaf's football became a little anxious and dis-jointed, giving Wulfrun hope that they shouldn't have been allowed. They converted their new found foot hold in the game into a goal with virtually their first real chance - something Maple had failed to do with several attempts.
Maple got back into the game on the stroke of half time, Homer heading home a well taken Lycett corner.
The half time break seemed to give Maple a new lease of life as they dominated the second half. Brett, who was unlucky with several first half chances started firing - and a quick Brett hatrick later put Maple firmly in charge of the game. The industrious Warr picked up a goal from a Brett assist before the returning Mitchell scored with his third touch coming off the bench - Brett with the assist again. With Maple coasting to victory Wulfrum pulled back a late goal but it was merely a consolation.
Maple played far from brilliantly against frankly poor opposition, but got the result which is what counts at the end of the day.
With several players due to come back hopefully there will be competition for places and the bench will be full of quality options.

An all too familiar story for Maple Leaf.
Reduced numbers around Xmas due to injuries and other committments.
This resulted in Maple having 12 players, two of whom were injured.
Confidence still seemed fairly high before the game; how things can change.
The pitch (after being unplayable last week) was awful. It seemed difficult to run let alone pass the ball. However, there were no excuses to concede 8 goals, most of which were from corners/crosses.
All too often opposition players were unmarked leaving free headers at goal.
Pushing forward the tactic seemed to be the long ball when no one could kick the ball more than 20 yards!
There were glimpses of hope in the first half however.
Both strikers found a lot of space upfront aided by Lycett and Varley on the wings but the opportunities never materialised.
Defensively Maple were good in the air and there were some good tackles. In particlar a sure goal for Royal until a crunching tackle came in from Walker in the 6 yard box.
Homer (E) did have a 25 yard free kick but was unable to get enough power to trouble the keeper.
Lycett did score from a free-kick later in the first half when the keeper fumbled the ball into his own net.
The second half couldn't have started better. Homer (P)chased down a back-pass to the keeper who could only rebound his clearance off Homer's leg into the net.
This made the score 4-2 but more easy goals came from Royal.
Maple could have closed the gap with efforts from Homer (E)and Fisher but were denied by the keeper.
Right at the end Homer (E) broke down the right channel and floated a cross to Lycett who volleyed just wide to end a frustrating afternoon for Maple.
With the cup out of the way (and hopefully a bad performance out of Maple's system) they can concentrate on moving up the League table.
One more game against tough opposition next week and then a 3 week break for Xmas.
Maple Leaf's Christmas Wish is to get a full squad each week.

Match Report: "After not playing for 5 weeks it was always going to be interesting to see how the players would do against their loftily positioned opponents.
Maple blitzed Handsworth in the opening stages - plenty of good swift attacking moves resulting in many attempts on goal, though most were just narrowly wide. Maple took the lead after a Lycett freekick was well saved by the gk, but he could not hold onto the ball and Mander had anticpated the gk's slip to tap-in from close range.
It was 2-0 to Maple soon after - Asante-Boakye finding himself 25yrds from goal and unleashed a sweet strike that the unfortunate gk misjudged and fumbled in. A well flighted Millership freekick was met with a firm textbook header from Homer into the far corner to make it 3-0. In between numerous chances were being created and with Maple resolute in defence it LOOKED like all 3 points were certain...
and then...
Maple decided to stop doing the things which created those chances, and halted the slick passing and dogged tackling. From a Handsworth corner concentration and marking went amiss for a free header at the back post to make it 3-1.
This gave Handsworth some encouragement, and began to apply more pressure on a Maple team no struggling to get back to levels of play displayed early on in the game.
In the 2nd half a penalty was awarded and converted by Handsworth, and now Maple were firmly on the back foot - not being able to string 2 passes together and often missed tackles and were caught out of position.
Maple did score (though disallowed for off-side) and had a couple of chances on the counter-attack - but too often the simple pass was ignored, or players in good positions did not demonstrate any desire to receive and hold the ball.
The final 10 minutes of the game saw Handsworth score a deserved equaiser - poor marking and a missed clearence found the opposition no8 unmarked in the box, who fired sweetly into near bottom corner. With just minutes remaining the ever-probing Mander skipped around a couple of Handsworth defenders, then the gk and fired home for the winner.
This game has shown that footy is a game of 90 minutes and if attitudes slacken early on you will get punished. Hopefully, many Maple players learn from this for the tough away fixture vs Sutton next week - a game needed to win if Maple have any wish to finish in the top 4/5 of the division.
It was noticable that when Jon Warr went off just who was willing to get stuck in and do the necessary work to get hold of the ball, break up the opposition flow of play or just provide a defensive screen for the overworked defence and gk.
Regrettably, poor attitude and a lack of commitment from certain players overshadow the fine and effective play which had taken Maple to 3-0 up early on."

Subs: Glover for Homer E, Varley for Campbell, Asante-B for Lycett.
Thanks to P Homer, Ade, Neil & Shing for coming along to support Maple.
Match Report: "A strange and somewhat subdued opening to the game saw Maple on the backfoot as they struggled to come to terms with Sutton's 3-5-2 formation.
Sutton scored through a Maple error as gk Gater came to collect a throughball and missed it - allowing the surprised forward to tap in for 1-0. Only at this stage did Maple begin to press their opponents, along with making a few sporadic attacking moves. Shortly before half-time Maple equalised through Homer - a srappy piece of play resulting in finding Homer with the ball under feet, somehow managing to smartly adjust his bodyshape to fire into the far corner from 15 yards out.
The 2nd half saw Maple press Sutton back and only solid defending, good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept Maple at bay. Maple's dynamic midifield were now bossing the game and creating good phases of attacking play - unfortunately some players refused to give simple passes and gamble on getting into decent positions.
As Maple pressed further on for another goal gaps were beginning to appear at the back and Sutton took advantage with one of their few attacking breaks and scored - again questionable goalkeeping after an initial failure to clear the ball earlier.
Maple then changed to a 3-4-3 formation with good supply of crosses from substitute Varley - unfortunately too few were anticipated on. Several half-chances were then missed - some narrowly, some way-off. Maple can count themselves unfortunate not to find an equaliser - if the team can perform for 90mins as they did for the end 35mins then the team should accrue more victories than defeats in the coming matches.
To the player who interrupted the manager's halftime teamtalk with a call for anything 'positive to say' - you are lucky that Ste is a laidback manager - if that were me as boss I'd have thrown you out for saying that to me after giving that gutless performance - let alone later on ignoring tactical instructions to the detriment of his teammates to seemingly do as he pleased.
Others may wish to stop talking amongst themselves and listen to what is being said at halftime - too often players ignore what is being asked of them - yet are more than willing to put the boot in for what they see as negative advice.
Perhaps if certain players played to their capabilities Maple would be in a position where the positives would outweight the negatives when giving an appraisal at halftime?"

Match Report: "Maple started the game brightly with Fisher and Mander looking too lively for a sluggish Wake Green defence. Despite Maple's defence playing solidly and pressurising the opposition well up the pitch, the away team took the lead through a very generous penalty awarded for a push in the box.
However Maple remained upbeat and soon after Fisher drew the home team level and then put them in the lead with two well taken goals. Maple continued to press with defence and midfield winning the lion share of challenges and shortly before half time, Lycett added a third direct from a corner.
Unfortunately, Wake Green struck direct from a free kick on the stroke of half time when the Maple wall disintigrated leaving Evans with no chance.
The 3-2 score line made for a nervy second half with Wake Green creating more chances than in the first, although Maple also squandered several good chances during the last quarter of the game. However the home side went on to record a valuable victory, which needs to be repeated next week."

Match Report: "Maple settled well into this game early on and created several chances to score - many going close - but could not quite break down a resolute Wake Green side and their dogged goalie.
Mander was often the focal point of the attacks, with J, Glover and Mitchell providing good approach play. At the other end the Maple back line were composed and tidy, with gk Gater making a brave double-save when eventually called upon.
With Varley probing and non-stop running causing problems out wide it seemed only a matter of time before Maple would score the 1st. Good play from the midfield set Mander free down the left flank once again - and Varley's excellent run to the back post was found by Mander's pullback for a tap-in for 1-0.
After halftime Maple went in search of a 2nd goal and were rewarded when good play from Varley found Mander in the penalty area to finish smartly. It was soon 3-0 after more good approach play from the midlfield finding Mitchell to fire in.
A 4th goal seemed on the cards - especially when Gibbons pulled a shot wide from a couple of feet, and Glover going close on a few occasions too.
Overall it was a solid team performance - Randle and Walker abley backing up the 2 determined centrebacks, gk Gater in command of his area and defence, Kirby and Mitch dominating their opposite numbers, J and Varley constantly probing and running and Glover and Mnader proving a thorn in the side for the Wake Green defence all afternoon.
This performance will need to be replicated for next week's must-win game at home vs Sutton."

Match Report: "Sorry to say I missed the first 4 goals - so apologies for the crapness of this match report (but not the others
Am told they involved a dubious penalty for Sutton and some dodgy defencding from Maple - yet equalled out with some fine finishing from Kirby and Warr.
2 carbon-copy setplays from Kettle ensured Kirby and Warr scored simple 2 latter goals - right place, right time - and very welcome.
Overall, the game should have been put beyond a dogged Sutton team - with Maple wasting many creative chances throughout the game. What was pleasing to see was that Maple were as resolute as their opponents - and despite some late pressure from Sutton, Maple held firm to ensure the 3points.
Special mentions to Kirby - not often does a defensive midlfielder score 3 in a game - especially as he was originally a right back! Well in Kirbs!
Many thanks also to Homer P - one of the lads who played for Maple back in the Sunday leagues many years ago - seems another op may put him out of action for a fair while - all the best to Paul for his enthusiasm - may his opponents' shins Rest-In-Peace. Am sure he'll be giving Maple the benefit of his experience and sharing ideas (along with tearing his hair out) from the touchlines soon..."

Match Report: "A depleted Maple side started well against top of the league Schofield - good overlapping play from Walker boosting attacking numbers and carrying a threat in the opponents half.
Unfortunately against top teams mistakes rarely go unpunished, and after a few narrow offside calls as well near misses and good saves from gk Evans, Schofield broke thorugh after poor alertness in the Maple defence.
Soon after the score was 3-0 with the lively Scho's fowards proving too much for a ballwatching backline. In between this Maple did have a couple of chances - Glover forcing a superb save from the opposition gk, an obvious penalty turned down from the static and seemingly indecisive ref. Some good attacking play from the Maple rightside sadly wasn't capitalised upon.
In the second half, with the game out of reach, Maple changed things around looking for solutions - but were soon punished after a gk error for no.4
Soon after neat finishes from Scohes ensured 5 and 6 to cap a miserable day for Maple, though the scoreline is a little harsh for their hard work and endeavour - esp the midfield, who battled throughout.
Next up is Aston Youth - a team who have been having mixed results of late - let's hope with more playing returning Maple can match them and take the 3pts required to help towards securing that 4th spot."

Maple Leaf 2 - Wylde Green 5
April 8 2006, 6:22 PM
I can't remember the exact team unfortunately - if someone can fill this in that would be great.
A poor game for Maple where many, many chances were converted into only 2 goals (Mander and Campbell) and defensive lapses and clinical finishing allowed Wylde Green to score 5.
A result which means Maple are struggling to maintain their promotion push.
A fantastic result for Maple Leaf - just rewards for a very solid Maple performance.
A first half dominated by Maple got the perfect reward with Lycett scoring a trademark left foot strike, things got even better soon after with Mander smashing a goal of the season candidate past the Aston keeper who could only watch as it flew in the corner from 25 yards. Maple were passing well and biting into challenges making it difficult for the team who started the day in 2nd place. The third goal was a well worked team goal, the ball being played into Glover's feet, who held up the ball then slipped a pass through to Campbell breaking from midfield, who then held off a defenders challenge before calmly slotted past the keeper. Aston scored 2 minutes after to make it 3-1 going into half time.
With the wind against in the second half Maple needed to defend well, which they did - also managing to create some good attacking situations.
On 85 minutes an innocous challenge left an Aston player writhing on the floor in agony - an Ambulance arrived to take the unfortunate player to hospital with a broken leg. All at Maple Leaf wish the stricken player all speed in recovery.
A great result for Maple, well deserved and just unfortunate to be marred by the incident near the end.

Match Report: "An early evening kick-off resulting in severla players unable to make the game or get there for the start saw a depleted Maple side take to the field of play against their lofty positioned opponents.
On such a small narrow pitch there was no let up in the pace of the game, and a Sadler error in judgement in the swirly conditions resulted in Handsworth working the ball for a good cross to be tapped in at the back stick for 1-0.
Soon after Maple hit back - Homer E rounding off a probing Maple move, resulting from a fine Lycett delivery. Almost immediately Maple scored again - a long range effort from Mander leaving the Handsworth goalie helpless. Just before halftime another superbly flighted set-piece from Lycett saw Warr rise at the back post to head in from close range for 3-1.
The 2nd half was to prove a different story - Handsworth upped the tempo of the game and began to exert pressure on the Maple penalty box throughout the remainder of the match. Cross after cross, probing passes, through balls, punts, and set-pieces were all dealt with by, not only a resolute Maple back line, but all of the team mucking in and getting a boot in the way of their opponent's attacking play.
Around 20 mins from the end Handsowrth scored from a penalty - a harsh award against Asante-Boakye, who had looked to have won the ball & then been caught by a forward's momentum. At 3-2 even more pressure and nervy moments were abound - with gk Gater pulling off fine saves from a freekick, and spreading himself well to put off a Handsworth player with the goal at his mercy from 6yrds out.
3-2 the final score, a deserved result for Maple for their determination and resolution to get the the result, with some nice passing moves and countattacking play throughout - Mander and Bellamy both going close on a couple of occasions after good penetrating runs on goal."

Bournville Colts 0 - 5 Maple Leaf
April 19 2006, 12:06 PM
"A friendly match played at West Smethwick Park.
A 10-man Maple team beat their 9-man youthful opponents in a frankly disinteresting game in which both sides often struggled to string simple passes to teammates - and ignoring those in better positions throughout.
Only performances from the usual players - who put the team before themselves - kept the game from descending into a farce.
Credit to Bournville, who kept plugging away for the whole of the match - depsite the scoreline - and in a couple of seasons will be fine additions to the B'ham AFA. Also kudos to their gk, who made many fine saves throughout.
Hopefully Maple's shooting boots will be back for Wednesday's game vs Meriden - have not seen a display of erratic, poor and selfish finishing since I last saw WBA play live back in '83."
