I wish they could locate or separate the part where Cheng Chao-An enters the brothel for the third time. I think this would make the movie even better because it shows that the protagonist has turned hard for the final event.
Cheng has nothing left....no hope, no joy, his life has no meaning anymore, and he has have no one left to protect. So of course you have him throwing away his stuff, enjoying his last hours as a free man in the company of a Thai whore, and then his chip bag for his last supper. In fact, were it not for his bloodlust in destroying the Boss, Cheng would've remained in the whorehouse indefinitely. The hearbreak was just too much for him to handle.
Him walking up with the bag to the Mansion's gate is almost a jump cut in comparison and totally undermines the buildup of the fight, and also undermines Cheng coming out of the fight like an Incredible Hulk turn where he puts up his hands in the crucifix kind of pose, signaling his exhaustion from everything. No wonder this movie beat out the Sound of Music in Hong Kong.
