This one is low-medium speed maglev train developed at Southwestern Jiaotong University. This model is suitable for metro transportation.

Another one waiting for test is developed at CAC in Chendu too. This model is a fast speed one. Its speed can reach 500KM/hour as reported. This model is suitable for intra-city transportation.

BEIJING (AP) - China successfully tested a locally made magnetic levitation train, the first time the country has achieved the feat without using foreign technology, state media reported Monday.

The 20-ton test maglev train ran steadily Sunday on a 1,400-foot experimental line in the provincial capital of Chengdu, the capital of southwestern Sichuan province, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday.

The test train can hold 60 people and travel up to 100 mph, Xinhua reported, citing Zhang Kunlun, deputy director of the School of Electrical Engineering at the Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu.

The maglev train was developed by a research team at the university, one of China's key engineering schools, Xinhua reported. The technology uses powerful magnets to suspend a train above a track and propel it at high speeds.

The cost of the Chinese maglev train is low, and it is suitable for urban traffic, Zhang said.

``The successful test of the train shows that China has mastered the technology of low-to-medium speed maglev trains,'' he was quoted as saying.

China is home to the world's first commercially operating maglev train, which links one of Shanghai's airports with the city's financial district.

The rail line was built with German technology. Japan had lobbied China to use its Shinkansen bullet train technology for the line, while France pitched its TGV system.

The Chinese government said earlier that work will begin this year on a second maglev line linking Shanghai and the resort city of Hangzhou, a $4.4 billion, high-speed line that can run trains at up to 280 mph.

The new line, due to launch by 2010, will cut travel time from Shanghai to Hangzhou to a half-hour from the current two hours.

Cool. I guess with cheaper maglev sources China can magnetized all its railways in the future.

We are really working on high-tech issues step by step, imagine after 20 years how many Maglev trains are running in China and even got exported

Well good news.
But somehow the train doesn't look very air-dynamic.

that's because it's a low-medium speed testing prototype. but never mind high speed and better ones are being developed. actually there is not only one institution that is researching this technology.

What is the point of low speed maglev? Why not just use conventional rails then? Should be much cheaper to build and run.

The Germans set up the Maglev in Shanghai. Their engineers , technicians and a whole army of Siemens people got it off the ground and working. The Germans have been hopping mad that the chinese are trying to build a Maglev network / extend it by copying the Siemens designs and simply stealing their intellectual property. There have been break ins in the maitenanace yard of the Magleve trains and there are unknown people going over the entire train with a fine toothcomb. Even the german chancellor Ms Angela Merkel commented on it and said 'How do you deal with a country like China that follows no rules whatsoever? '

lol! yellow chinese slaves who copy cat everything lecturing again!lol!

maglev plan that depends on stealing german maglev technolgy and buidling a poor copy of it without paying royalties and licensing fees is surely not the way to go. It just proves that in china just like there is no ownership of land and property, there is no ownership of intellectual property as well.lol!

India produces what? Jack. If you critisize China for assimilating foreign designs and technology, my argument would be at least China CAN assimilate foreign designs and technology, India can't even copy a design straight off a blue print for god's sake.

Chinese people work their butt off and say nothing. Indians talk their butt off about the work they'll be doing however what they say rarely corresponds with what they actually do.

That's why the West shouldn't export technology to China! The original message should be "China successfully test first locally copied maglev train".

copy your mother's ass. that's a completely different design. and there are several institutions in china have been researching this technology. soon you will see more advanced ones coming out. didn't you japs copy chinese language?

btw. india's british train copies.

Well, they are efficient, carrying 20x the originally designed capacity.

OMG,

how many people the trains can carry? they should be very solid. That's very innovative and creatve to take trains like that. haha

Is there any danger?
