I don't think so. Asians are bad in track and fields. That's why 110m hurdle runner Liu Xiang is China's hero. I hope he can get a gold this time. He is under huge presure.

Bindra does look like a little boy, wouldn't expect him to lift up a gun with that face.

India Wins First Individual Gold During Shooting Competition

August 13 2008, 1:32 AM

India won its first-ever gold medal in individual competition Monday as 25-year-old businessman Abhinav Bindra won the men's 10-meter air-rifle competition.

The Journal's Olympics page boasts full coverage of the 2008 Beijing Games, from politics and the environment to sports and the business of sports, with real-time updates from Journal reporters. Plus, see medal counts, athlete biographies, national profiles, statistics and more.

Immediately, Mr. Bindra, chief executive of a computer-games equipment company in the city of Chandigarh, was hailed as a national hero. The Minister of Railways awarded him and a companion a free, lifetime rail pass to travel in a first-class, air-conditioned compartment. The Board of Control for Cricket in India, cricket's governing body and the most powerful sporting institution in the country, said it would give Mr. Bindra a cash award of about $62,500.

From left: Silver winner Zhu Qinan of China, gold winner Abhinav Bindra of India and bronze winner Henri Hakkinen of Finland celebrate with their medals on the podium following the men's 10m air rifle shooting finals.

His victory also may engage India in the Olympics after a decidedly ho-hum reception to the Games so far, aside from widely held admiration for archrival China for the efficiency and spectacle of the opening ceremony. The India-Sri Lanka cricket match is taking much of the limelight. It doesn't help that DD Sports, the Indian government-run channel broadcasting the Games, makes some unusual spectator choices: The U.S.-China basketball game, one of the highlights so far, was frequently interrupted for women's judo, even though the judo featured no Indians.

Samshad Ali, a 20-year-old student at a computer institute in New Delhi, said he felt "happy and proud" on hearing of Mr. Bindra's gold medal. He quickly messaged his friends from his mobile phone and they congratulated each other.

"This will give great passion and encouragement to all the sportsmen in this country," said Mr. Ali. "By next Olympics, India will be among the U.S. and China, on the top of the medal tally."

Wow so much optimism

I will take optimisim over pessimism anyday.

Besides since you NRIs are not in India you may not know much about it. Bhindra was unable to lift a rifle- forget competing- for months because of severe illness and injury. It was his luck that he belongs to a rich family and was able to afford to spend Rs. 1 crore annualy on training, the facilities which should have been provided by the Govt. of India.

There are 3 more boxers in the fray. Before you dismiss them bear in mind that one boxer- Akhil Kumar- beat the current world champion, a Russian boxer. They already moved into the quarters.

You bangladeshi sand eatin mud spittin cretin crawlin topside nudity backside sore bottom penetrated gay arab dildo arab arse lickin fish spittin bangladeshi lungi dweller grass smelling garbage culture, go and read some facts first.

India won 8 olympic gold medals in hockey itself. it won 6 hockey gold in 6 consecutive attempts, a record that wont be possible for any country to break.

While we Indians celebrate our first individual gold, go and mourn that Bangladeshis dont even know what Olympics mean.

Stadnik started of well as he earned the first point while Sushil levelled it soon but the tough Ukrainian took the lead again as he led the first round 2-1.

Stadnik strengthened his lead by scoring quick six points in the second round while Sushil didn't even score a lone point against his mighty Ukrainian opponent.

"How do the Indians do in cricket and field hockey?"

I don't know about hockey, but India is in the top ten of over 100 countries that are members of the ICC.
