Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- AstraZeneca Plc will eliminate 1,400 jobs and close plants in Spain, Belgium and Sweden by 2013 as the U.K.'s second-largest drugmaker expands efforts at cutting costs amid increased competition from generic medicines.
AstraZeneca said the moves are separate from the 7,600 job cuts planned to occur by 2010 as part of a cost-savings program announced two years ago.
The London-based drugmaker yesterday said full-year earnings would be at the low end of the company's forecast because of anticipated generic competition to the Pulmicort Respules asthma treatment. AstraZeneca said today it won a temporary restraining order in the U.S. District Court in New Jersey preventing the sale of a Pulmicort copy by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
until a patent hearing scheduled for Nov. 25.
The facilities in Porrino, Spain; Umeaa, Sweden; and Destelbergen, Belgium will shut down, AstraZeneca said. Of the 1,400 positions, about 600 full-time jobs will be lost in Sweden as the company expands packaging operations in Wuxi, China.
The company also is trimming positions at its units in Soedertaelje in Sweden and Macclesfield in the U.K. as it shifts production to lower-cost countries in emerging markets, where sales last quarter gained 18 percent.
AstraZeneca rose 3 pence, or 0.1 percent, to 2,504 pence at
9:01 a.m. in London trading.
