On average, China is very poor especially if you go by nominal gdp per capita....but gdp per capital based on PPP is much higher meaning the bang for the buck is just that much greater in China. In fact, the urban dwellers' (500 million) standard of living is much higher than the Chinese average. Like everything else, we have a huge baggage of farmers who drag down every indicator, which is our main problem and why high growth was needed to create jobs to absorb population migration of the rapid urbanization process, which will likely create a population of the USA in the next 10 years. As urbanization proceeds further and the income parity between urban and rural decreases, our gdp per capita will invariably increase.

I am sure the currency movements of late also helped as the Euro and Rupee both weakened against the dollar. the Yuan stayed flat while the Yen strengthened against the dollar.
