TIRUPATI: The much-touted laptop for the masses said to have been built by students of Vellore Institute of Technology that would cost a mere Rs 500
actually turned out to be only a computing device.
Making this clear at the inauguration of the national Mission on Education Programme organized by the Union HRD Ministry here on Tuesday, joint secretary N K Sinha said the computing device is 10 inches long and 5 inches wide and has been priced at around $30 at the event. However, he refused to comment as to why was it being projected as a laptop when it was not.
The so-called laptop actually turned out to be a storage device containing megabytes of data info which can be accessed by a user by connecting this device to a laptop. It meant that unlike the internet, this device can display that information that has already been stored.
Some delegates at the exhibition claimed that with the help of this device a laptop caosting about $60 can eventually be manufactured. But for now at least the $10-laptop turned out to be damp squib.

Indians, come here to feel proud of your government, your knowledge-based economy, your high-tech and genius design.
It is amazing to see that India government to spend money to make a useless brick that costs $30. Also, so many top indian colleges and insitutes were involved in the project.

Do you really think the Indian government can afford buying every kid in India a computer like the one you learned to work on?
It's better than nothing, and you'll see which kids will have intrest in it and which won't.

If the Indian govt can't afford to buy every kid in school a computer, then it would have been far better to buy 2 or 3 computers per classroom and have the Indian kids take turns using the computers.
I mean how much can you learn about computers from a storage device??
Thats like using a bicycle to teach someone to drive a car!!
Re: India's $10-laptop proves to be a damp squib. HAHAHA!

I don't know how heavy the brick is. Maybe it is good for kids' fighting. But that's too expensive for indian kids though.
Learn computer, I suggest India buy some game player that was popular in early 90s in China. Those players can be hooked up with TV as monitor and keyboard, some people even learn Basic programmingon those players. The palyers used tapes as storage. The players can be made very small now and very cheap considering the tech progress.

Is it now? a more apt analogy would be that its like using a bicycle to teach someone how to ride a motorbike. The first problem behind getting people to accept computers is their fear of technology. This is meant to do just that. But then again, you're living in the west, not in some poor remote village of China or India, what would you know about hardships "kid". You probably had the govt place a computer right at your doorstep for you.

Some Indians were so high when the news said the $10 laptop would be released the next day. All the comments come from Rediff.com. Of course that's before they saw the real thing.HAHA
What a pleasent news. I am in Sydney now. I hope the news spreads over here too, I mean in newspapers. So that we Indians can show to the world that - Stop looking at China for your cheap supplies, Look at India. Start byuing from India now.
I really am so happy and will definately talk about it to my friends.
I request you guys to send the news to as many people as you can
As it is we are going to cream the world auto industry with Nano coming on roads by March, and now USD10-USD20/- we will be able to take over the major players in the computer industry. Its amazing, wonder why we can't get into mobile techonology and compete with China.

And how much are kids meant to learn about computing with a plastic storage device thats NON INTERACTIVE??
I mean to even properly demonstrate and show how the device works (ie. saves data and files) to school kids you need to hook the device up to a COMPUTER WITH A MONITOR! understand?? lol
Now just to remind you, this is what was initially claimed by top Indian govt officals:
http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1226142 excerpt
"New Delhi: The government will soon launch nano computers for Rs500 only, for students.
Human resources development minister Arjun Singh will launch a prototype of the specially designed portable computers in Tirupati on February 3, and they will be in the market in six months."
The $10 laptop project, first reported in TOI three years ago, has come as an answer to the $100 laptop of MIT's Nicholas Negroponte that he was trying to hardsell to India. The $10 laptop has come out of the drawing board stage due to work put in by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT-Madras and involvement of PSUs like Semiconductor Complex. At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down, R P Agarwal, secretary, higher education said."

Non interactive? It can play back ebooks, automatically synchronize with a central server and update itself, probably has some form of input since you can see it has USB ports too. Just how did you come to the conclusion its non interactive? LOL...did you design it?
SAying you can't learn about a system without interacting is it is so retarded I shouldn't even be talking to you. a storage device is NOT a laptop computer by any stretch of the imagination!!
Its not? What is the definition of a computer? A simple def would be thats its a machine that accepts an input and gives out a coherent output. Can perform high speed mathematical calculations too.
The device we have here can..
1) Implement the TCP/IP protocol to automatically download files, WIRELESSLY from a central server.
2) Read out E-books
3) Has a storage capacity of 2 gigabytes.
That my friend is a computing device. And for 10 USD, I'd like to see you make something better. Now go do something useful instead of wasting our time like a dumb troll.

1. For me, it is not a laptop. I will only call a laptop a laptop, it should have these hardware: A CPU, input device, output device (Such as monitor). They can be simple, but these 3 are the must.
2. The "Indian laptop" is not more useful than a thumb drive that is a available for anywhere and much cheap than the Indian laptop.
3. The "Indian laptop" needs a real computer or a real laptop to display the contents its stored. So the poor indians still cannot read the them since they still cannot afford a real PC or a real laptop.
High ambition, bid mouth, but low capability. That's India!

Dude seriously are you trying to say a storage device is the SAME as a laptop computer?? LOL, this is a ridiculous argument!!
Firstly, Lets just remind ourselves what was promised by the Indian govt!!
For $10 (500 Rupees) it promised to make a LAPTOP COMPUTER for the general population, NOT A STORAGE DEVICE! LOL
Now a laptop computer is "interactive" because it has INTERGRATED output and input devices (monitor and keyboard)!! while a storage device BY ITSELF (with no connections to external devices)) is "non interactive" because it has NO integrated output or input devices, instead it only has input and output CONNECTIONS!!
And dude whats the CPU, RAM and graphics capability of a storage device?? LOL
Regarding reading E-books, can a storage device playback E-books BY ITSELF without connecting to a E-book reader??
Dude your beginning to sound nonsensical
Can a storage device BY ITSELF (with no connections to external devices) run applications like word processing, computer games, graphics designing, computer animations, image manipulation eg. morphing, web publishing etc?? LOL, Can a storage device (by itself) surf the internet using a web browser and allow you to participate in websites like WAFF?? LOL, can a storage device (by itself) show Flash multimedia and Youtube clips?? LOL, Dude I can go on but what would be the point?
I think the short answer to these questions is a emphatic NO!! yet these applications can be easily run by most laptop computers!!
Now since you stubbornly believe a storage device is the SAME as a laptop computer, heres my challenge to you, I know the $10 Indian laptop was going to be a cheap computer, so lets pick a easy application that any cheap ass computer can do, eg. word processing.
Show me proof that a storage device BY ITSELF (with NO connections to external devices) can perform proper word processing?? just like any laptop computer can easily do by itself with no external help. (with links from credible computing sources please)

Wootness
I admit I hadn't seen any pictures of this "laptop" when I posted my previous reply to you.
I have since seen pictures of it on the web (and it has also been posted by Arsenal) and I've noticed that it has a tiny screen, I mean a really freaking TINY SCREEN!! LOL
Since the dimensions of device itself is 10 x 5 inches, I estimate the screen is no bigger than 1 x 3 inches!! The tiny display screen means it definitely cannot perform many of the tasks REAL LAPTOP computers can do, like surfing the internet and look at web pages properly, you won't be able to see graphics, images and animations properly, won't be able to do proper word processing (imagine trying to check the layout of your documents lol) etc, in fact you won't be able to see freaking much at all on that miniscule screen lol
Although yeah you might be able to use it as a ebook reader, but how many words can you see on that tiny display screen at any given time? 4 or 5 words maybe?? lol, I mean having to scroll after reading 4 or 5 words every time will be a really frustrating nightmare experience!! and it will probably drive you up the wall LOL
Look at it dude!! this is NOT A PROPER LAPTOP!! LOL, I mean lets be honest, if the shoe was on the other foot and the Chinese was to make a similar device and called it a LAPTOP COMPUTER you would be laughing your ass off right now! LOL
And why haven't the Indian govt release any proper specifications on it?? lol
Although yeah, you could get away with calling it a "computing device" lol, and I agree making such a device available to the poor isn't necessarily a bad thing.
But my contention is, why did the Indian govt had to EXAGGERATE and call it a laptop computer?? When it clearly isn't??

I was skeptical of the report when it first came out. After seeing the images of the product, my suspicions have been confirmed. I would not go so far as to qualify this device as a "laptop," despite the sentiments of N. K. Sinha. At best, the device can be used for tutorial purposes to educate the masses.

Pakistan is a minuscule player in every field. Who invited you into this discussion?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOL , like how we were a miniscule player in physics when we contributed a major proponent of the elctroweak theory?(Dr.A.S ahem ahem)
Starting with only 1 university from the time of independance I would call that an achievment.
Buddy wake up , India is only a major player in outsourcing , even that seems to be overhyped as recently the Satyam chief declared how he faked figures leading his firm to be dubbed 'India's Enron'
I have seen India's electronic products and they seem to be ****tier than anything else available on the market (INTEX ahem ahem) , infact we routinely take your porducts at university and improve them to a whole different level all the time. One thinks why these products were released without proper research. The only thing they are good at making are UPS devices.
Also judge my country after your country has made a the world's highest density very long processor. The reason we are not leaning towards the consumer electronic fabrication side is that we are still in the process of creating a proper manufacturing base.See unlike Indian firms we dont like to fake figures and want to properly design our products before we release them into the market.
It makes perfect sense economically if we are taking time to develop ourselves as we did not have the same amount of resources and thus similar amounts of skilled labour as India. It seems histroically irrelevant to compare the two countries or to compare speed of development in Pakistan to the west or to tiny countries like Singapore or UAE that have significantly lower populations and small geographic areas as they will be far able to utilise thier resources quickly
and more effectively becuase of certain economic advantages.Countries like Pakistan will take more time but overconfident countries like India with 400 million poor poeple will take even more.

Satyam chief declared how he faked figures leading his firm to be dubbed 'India's Enron'
Yet, satyams true figures right nowwould probably exceed that of every major pakistani company, added together and multiplied by three.
I have seen India's electronic products
I have never seen a Pakistani electronic product. What does that tell you?
we routinely take your porducts at university and improve them to a whole different level all the time
I took apart a toy car and added a fire alarm to it and now I have a portable fire detection robot. What does that mean? LOL...that the toy car company was crap for not adding a simple circuit into the car in the first place?
Also judge my country after your country has made a the world's highest density very long processor.
Majority of intels research into desktop CPU's is done in India. Vinod Dham is called the father of the Pentium family, Hargobind Khorana for his work in genetics, Srinivas Ramanujan. Who founded Sun microsystems, - Vinod Khosla. Who invented the numerical system, the '0' on which all logic gates work, Aryabhatta. Who can be arguably called the inventor of radio waves? JC Bose.
Lets turn you around little boy, come and talk to me when your country manages to get a supercomputer or a SLV of its own.
want to properly design our products before we release them into the market.
