India's per capita income doubles in 7 yrs to Rs 38,084

Mon, Feb 9 03:35 PM

New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI) Moderation in the growth rate has come with some good news, with the country's per capita income expecting to more than double over the last seven years to Rs 38,084 in 2008-09, reflecting improvement in the living standards of an average Indian. Per capita income, according to advance estimates for national income released today, is expected to grow by 14.4 per cent during the current fiscal, the highest growth rate recorded in a single year in the last decade.

Though the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate during the current fiscal is estimated to drop to 7.1 per cent from 9 per cent a year ago, per capita income is expected to soar by Rs 4,801 to Rs 38,084 during 2008-09. The country's per capita income, which is an important indicator of economic development of a nation, was Rs 18,885 during 2002-03.

The growth in the per capita income takes into account the increase in the country's population, which is likely to rise to 115.4 crore by March 2009 from 113.8 crore a year ago. In percentage terms, the previous highest increase in per capita income during the last decade at 13.5 per cent was witnessed during 2006-07.

However, after discounting for inflation (at 1999-2000 prices), the per capita income is expected to rise to Rs 25,661, representing an increase of 5.6 per cent. PTI.

\\Take out the inflation. Otherwise Zimbawe has larger increase.\\

Actually Zimbabwe is expereincing a hyperinflation and their GDP is declining for the seventh straight year.Their GDP is half what it was in 2000.The Zimbabweans definetely dont deserve this considering that their stock exchange is one of the best performers in the world until recently. It has become an unfortunate habit among people to compare their opponent countries or persons with African nations or persons with the intention of showing their opponent down and in the process knowingly or unknowingly contributing to the already widespread negative perception of Africa. While zimbabwe is declining, Africa also boasts several of world's fastest growing economies.Angola, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea and even Sudan are growing at more than 10% plus growth rates.Coming to the Indian percapita, we need to understand that even after adjusting for inflation it has risen more than 50%.Much of that growth is in fact in the last five years where it grew in double digits rates. If this year the economy grows by the projected 7.1% mark, then we could have a another double digit growth in nominal percapita income and anywhere between 5% to 8% in inflation adjusted levels.

50% could be more reliable in Indian case. Double in 7 years is a hype since it is not adjusted by inflation. India's inflation is not low in recent years. India currency was also devalued by almost 20% in 2008 alone comparing with devaluing US$.

I don't think per capita income is adjusted for inflation usually when reported. Btw, Zimbabwe is a bad example. Yeah they have hyper inflation, but GDP is measured in USD.
