A friend who like me, has retired from work, sent me this quote:

Owners of capital will stimulate working class to buy more and more of expensive goods, houses and technology, pushing them to take more and more expensive credits, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to bankruptcy of banks which will have to be nationalized and State will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism.

Karl Marx, Das Kapital, 1867

Is that what happened in the United States of America recently?

The banks are near bankruptcy now and the governments have to bail them out to save a financial crash. The nationalization has not happened yet and is not likely to happen although the governments are dishing out cash with strings attached and need of reporting.

Today, I saw the public admission of guilt of the President of the City Bank group regarding the lavish expenses which the company were supporting whilst on the other hand begging the Government for help. He has since cancelled the order of the executive jet and the executives are now travelling with commercial aircraft.

I do hope that the incentive package of Obama gets through and more importantly the world economy would be back in better state.

Only idiots will attribute prophetic qualities to what is plain to see.

But Marx is still wrong. Communism is as flawed as capitalism and once you realise that you go back to capitalism and the cycle repeats itself. The devil is always in the detail.

Tell you guys what. I just happen to read all volumes of Das Kapital... and Karl Marx was wrong

Reason is very simple . Before I tell you guys why he is wrong, I need to clarify and common misunderstanding about Socialism and Communism

99% of people tend to believe that when Karl Marx talked about communism, he talked about the BEST social structure... WRONG karl marx never meant that communism was the best way to go! Instead, what he meant in his books, was that communism was the result of collapse of capitalism -then ultimate result of capitalism.

Like mentioned in the original thread post, KM never believed that capitalism could hold. however, what he has stated in his quote, never happened in reality - as he missed a very very important factor:

You see KM lived during the height of industrialization, he thought that the capitalist (owner of factories) would get so rich as the machines would more and more replace the egalitarians (people with no capital - poor folks) and forced to work of what ever pay offered to them -final result, people will get so fed up with factory owners (the capitalists) that the egalitarians would eventually revolt and kill off all the capitalst and create a socialist society which he call communism (as according to KM that is the only system which is capable of supporting an industrialized community).

This made perfect sense at the time he lived - unfortunately he died before and birth of another class -the end result of capitalism is the backbone of society - THE MIDDLE CLASS; he missed the fact: in order for factories to run properly you need people to operate complicated machines. People that have education... and suddenly capitalist have to pay a huge premium to egalitarians in order to make their factories working properly!

So you see Karl Marx was not a prophete. Communism was his prediction and the end result the next step of social evolution.. that unfortunately never or can never happen. And Capitalism will not collapse at least not in the way karl marx have predicted!

the bottom line is... Karl Marx only saw 2 class... the Capitalists and the Egalitarians... he totally missed the middle class... which ironically is really the essence and foundation of capitalism!

And Capitalism will not collapse at least not in the way karl marx have predicted!

Capitalism will collapse because of limited natural resource. Capitalism is not sustainable in a resource poor world because high demand and limited supply will lead to instability. You've witnessed that yourself during food and petrol crisis in the middle of last year. Just a taste of what is yet to come.

Communism is actually a utopia and therefore not practical and will always devolves into totalitarianism.

The fall of capitalism will be followed by the rise of pragmatism.

I don't give a s.hit about whether communism is right or wrong. The part of the quote where Marx foresaw the elites forcing the masses to engage in unsustainable debt fueled consumption leading to the collapse of the entire system, is prohetic.

F.uck an eye for an eye. You take my eye, and I will kill you, and all those you care about. That is our policy.

Yea I can also predict that 1 + 1 will yield 2. I'm now a prophet.
