New Delhi, Feb. 10: A bit of school algebra may sometimes deliver a reality check. India is hoping that its economic growth will edge closer to Chinas 10 per cent, but it still lags over a century and a half behind the northern neighbour in its science and technology workforce.
A scientist at the Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation in Bangalore has shown that India will take at least 163 years to match Chinas research workforce of 850,000 even if Beijing were to freeze the number today.
At the CMMACS, chief scientist Gangan Prathap has spent years doing complex aerospace engineering mathematics. But he has now used simple school algebra to show that even if Indias 4,500 annual science doctorates were to join the 115,000-strong science and technology workforce, the country wont be able to touch the figure of 850,000 until 2170 AD.
This is a very optimistic estimate because many scientists retire and many doctorates go abroad or migrate to non-research careers, Prathap said. His calculations were published in the journal Current Science today.
Top scientists have long expressed a similar concern.
The biggest problem that India will face in the next decade or so is a human resources crunch in science and technology, said Professor C.N.R. Rao, head of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister.
There are several reasons for this impending crisis, Rao told The Telegraph. Some of the best talent is picked up by the US, Europe, even other Asian countries.
Worsening the external brain drain is an internal one: talent veering towards careers in management or information technology, he said.
Senior scientists have in the past warned that information technology has been pulling trained scientists away from research.
Weve lulled ourselves into thinking were doing great things, said Rajesh Kochchar, former director of the National Institute of Science Technology and Development Studies.
Rao said some effects of the talent drain away from science may already be visible.
Indias share of global research publications in science has dropped to unbelievably low levels, he said.
Studies indicate that research publications from India account for less than 2 per cent of research papers worldwide.
The department of science and technology had earlier this year announced plans to invest up to Rs 1,350 crore over the next five years to attract fresh talent into science, offering five-year job guarantees to doctorate students.
But Rao said hes worried the government hasnt been able to ease the stranglehold of the bureaucracy over appointments and the release of funds even when the funds have been approved by high decision-making agencies.
Can india posters list some technology fields that poor india has some edge over China? I been confused on this for a long time after I saw some indians claimed IIT is better than standford in many fields except the computer science.
I said here before that India's software industry hurts India a lot even India is bragging about it. Indians don't have too much choice for their jobs. Software service and call centers are the places that can provide easy-money opertunities. This make most of India's top talents to study software coding and most of the coding jobs do not require too much talent at all. It is a huge lose of brain force for India as a whole. This will make India's other industries very weak to compete against other countries.
It's virtually impossible for india to catch up to china
, unless suddenly india spends a whole lot of
money to build more universities and research institutions, which
is not likely as india has to divide its budget pie to health,
infrastructure,etc.etc.
oh, cowco cowla is a hell of an innovation.....the purification technology that's involved hasn't been invented by humans yet (other than indians of course)...
The other thing I wanted to mention here is the Research workforce.
I had pointed out in previous posts that gdp of a country is very much related to
the #of scientists (I guess those in research) per 100,000 population.
Based on the above figure of china/india: 850,000 / 115,000
or for china: 65 (research scientists) per 100K pop
india: 10 / 100K pop
if my memory is correct the figures for advanced countries such as usa, japan, western eu, etc
is about 200 / 100K.
in other words, assuming 100 / 100K would be considered quite viable, then china just needs
to increase by 50%, initially say within 10 yrs, whereas india would need to increase by 1,000 %.
The main problem India has is that the government simply does not allocate enough funds to research and development. This is why many Indians do not consider a graduate level degree from within India, and even if they do desire to go into research, they do so overseas. However, I'm not inclined to agree with the "internal" pull towards IT as this author states. I disagree because most people tend to go where the money lies, and research certainly is not one of those places in India, as opposed to IT. If more money was apportioned in research sectors, I would not be surprised to see a "boom" in research scientists.

No, we don't....The article is from an indian source and the person is a reputable indian scientist.... Personally, I don't think india is 163 years behind China, but definitely behind by about 100.....lol
But .. Indian scientists and phd are 10 times better than chinese or even americans .. so india still ahead of china ... I would expect some stupid smelly hairy indians say that ... as usual, talk only, no supporting data and no logic .. as simple as that ... perhaps it is right, indians is 1 million year behind in evolution .. still so hairy .. and they are so damn proud about that .. really sad
Well theres no need to bash them Indians. India's rise will surely benefit Asia as a whole but for the time being every Indian knows their place in the world and where their country is positioned at. Whatever words, arguments are bashing won't change that fact.
My god, the Chinese really don't care about India at all..ROFL.
haha...

Told you WAFF and real life are very different....Here we love to "play" with you indian clowns while in real life, india is insignificant in the minds of chinese in general.....
I wonder why Indians love to boast how great their country is and why they are not doing anything about it. It looks like they just love to talk and take no action, or is it their government is too corrupted and very good at brain washing.
india is insignificant in the minds of chinese in general
---------
Indians do care and also know a lot about Chinese,,
everybody with slitty eyes and flat nose is a Chinese and they are from Nepal,, lololol

Me ,, just stating some facts....that's all ,, lololol

told you, waff and reality are different.....everyday Chinese don't give a damn about india....all they know is US, Japan, Korea, UK, France, Germany.....Why??? Because they are ahead of us while india is a fraction of our economy.....
my full support to you ..
chinese really really really really really really really really really really really dont care a damn for black hairy meaningless indians ..
SURRENDER OF PAKI ARMY IN 1971
1N 1971 A NEW HISTORY AS WELL AS A NEW NATION WAS CREATED BY WE THE INDIANS..
Y'know hawkss, if you visited india and talked to some people, the first question they'd ask you would be "How's Nepal".
And I'm damn damn serious here.

Asian countries will dominate this century.
The next milestones are 5 years, 10 years and 15 years from now.
as I have stated before, what we are llooking for is Averages, eg. avg life expectancy,
#of phone lines per 1000 people, electricity capacity, literacy rate, etc.etc.
it's hard to compete with others who have established solid foundations, it's like a medium
size semiconductor company trying to compete with Intel, let a lone AMD against intel.
This is one of the major problems china is facing against japan, as jpn has established
decades of solid heavy industries giants and their chain of relationships with all kinds of
other companies inside jpn.
similarly for india to compete with china, it would be really hard as china has moved to
the next levels due to its strong financial and solid infrastructure, educational systems, etc.
once india and china open up their trades similar to nafta in north america, then things
will move to a completely different phases, imo.
