Why is it that China is so desperate to be powerful like the US? China doesn't really need to worry about being invaded and it's not about the welfare of all Chinese people which is obvious. So why do they gamble so much on rising so fast?
I fear China's future will be dictated totally by power, I believe if we ever thought the West was greedy, we've seen nothing yet.

I am pretty sure that the Chinese leadership needs that growth to relieve domestic social pressures that are building in China to save their own necks, survival is a powerful motivator.
"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it."
George Bernard Shaw
From everything I have seen, the Chinese do not want to be top dog for at least another 20 odd years. They have way too many internal problems to fix which for the most part, they are trying to do.
However, they do feel they deserve more of the pie in political world influence (fair enough), but the US is just such a baby when it doesn't get its own way lol

to be honest i dont think they are in a hurry to rise fast... simply returning to their rightful place in the global economy...
out of the past 5000 years of world history China has enjoyed the highest GDP and living standard in the globe for 4800 years out of 5000 years... So is really a matter of going back to the old equilibrium..
The real question is how did China go poor?
Answer: because they had a weak military by 1800 (the spent everything on art and pleasure)... as the result they were robbed dry by the western powers... So I guess rearming is simply them relearning their lesson... is would be stupid if they didnt...

I think you should open up a map and take a look at where China is located my friend...
No other nation is surrounded by so many conflicts like China... and no other nation is Surrounded by so many unstable nuclear powers as China...
China's heavliy armed neighbours:
India - nukes
Pakistan - nukes
Russia - nukes
Japan - nukes (rumoured to be US operated)
North Koear - nukes
If anything China should spent more consider the location... China is not like UK where you have a bankrupted Iceland to the west (with no military) and us friendly northman in the East... only thing UK has to worry about is some random icebear floating onshore from the northpole!

I don't tend to listen to things like Stratfor, but they made a good point about China. Geography dictates your power status.
Great Britain was a Island nation off the coast of the then most powerful continent, it possessed the most important trade route (Atlantic) for most part of a 150 years. However, America is the only nation large enough to be a modern superpower with access to both the Pacific (growing Asia) and Atlantic (established 'Old World' powers) and has naval power projection in both directions.
China is rather isolated due to its geography, a massive desert in the West followed by mountains and only access into the Pacific. There is also limited room for growth and food and water is becoming a strategic issue for China unlike America.
China is actually fighting a uphill battle to be a super power (in all arena's economic, political, social, cultural and military).

I especially like this statement
"China doesn't really need to worry about being invaded and it's not about the welfare of all Chinese people which is obvious. "
Hmm, let's see, china neighbors four nuclear states (Russia, India, Pakistan, NK), fought wars with four neighbors in the past 50 years (NK, Russia, India, Vietnam). But I can definitely see the rational for a strong US military, those Canadian and Mexican neighbors are damn scary lol.

#1 way to ascertain that you've lost an argument: Resorting to personal attacks.
Especially when the rest of the world seems to fear a rising China for no reason, other than outright ignorance, prejudice and unfounded fear....
Not true. They 'fear' because they don't wish to relinquish any power, which is natural. Have you studied how aggressive China was to foreign influence in it's Empire? They feared the outside world as much and even went to extremes to try and stop them losing power.
It is a natural reaction of any great power. The problem is, you can't stop the rise of China without being very aggressive, it can't be stopped now without massive upheaval. Count your lucky stars the West allowed itself to become so dependant through greed and short sightedness lol
They thought they could control and keep China a 'cheap' labour market without it growing. That is how I think they honestly thought of it.
