A joint venture involving Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. has won a huge contract for high-speed train sets from China's Ministry of Railways. The deal announced Monday is worth $4 billion US, with Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) Transportation Ltd.'s share estimated to be $2 billion US.

Bombardier China president Jianwei Zhang called the deal with China's government "one of the biggest contracts in the world in the field of railway transportation equipment."

Using Bombardier's Zefiro technology that boasts speeds of 380 km/h, the Bombardier joint-venture company will supply 80 "very high-speed" train sets --a total of 1,120 cars -- over a two-year period beginning in 2012.

"We are very pleased to be delivering leading-edge very high speed rail technology through Chinese expertise and resources," Pierre Beaudoin, president and CEO of Bombardier Inc., said. "This illustrates the strategic importance of delivering the most advanced rail technology for China from within China."

The train sets will be used across China's rail system, which is growing at red-hot speed.

Expect exact copies of all patented Bombardier railway tech on the export market within two years, it's remarkable how much one can shave of unit cost without all that expensive R&D stuff.

Just kidding (sort of).

^ Bombardier had trains running in Chinese rail system for over 2yrs now, no such thing is happening. There are no copyright issues regarding to Siemens Velaro, Bombardier, or the Shinkansen.

Isn't India's rail minister a guy from Bihar who was accused of being a crook but made the rail system profitable or sth like that (Lalu or sth?).

of course there isn't copyright issues: those b:tch gave it all for free.

When the Chinese came at a company where I work, we didn't even let them go to the toilet alone. That could explain we didn't had the contract LOL happy.gif

^ No need to flame, each countries development is different.

"When the Chinese came at a company where I work."

So which company you worked for? Alstom? Cause the Chinese did get the deal, but its the Pendolino.
