isn't this just the shanghai airport maglev picture ? ... also in light of current conventional high speed wheeled rail going up to 380kph or even higher in the future is it competitive with it's high cost to build a maglev track and train, also a problem with maglev is the magnetic field unknown health issues, this along with cost versus advantage hasn't made maglev other than a research project or low level token service and nothing on a medium to large scale anywhere in the world

No. This train was built by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. CAC has been working on this for years. Gayman tech was used. It was sent to shanghai and will be operational before World Expo.

This could be the reason why Chinese gov decided to extend the maglev line from Shanghai to hangzhou. But many believe it is waste of money since conventional express railroad is being built between the two cities and maglev can only save about 10 minutes.

It is also reported that Gayman companies transfer all the tech to China since no other business they can get in gaymany.

Even maglev is more futuristic, it is too late for China and has some drawbacks. China is taking the oppertunity to get tech.

China has own maglev tech for metro that only needs speed of less than 200km.

the picture has transrapid written all over it. report says some parts are import from germany.
i think this maglev is another licence-build like all other high speed trains that claim to be indigenous..

It said that gayman tech is used with improvement in materials so that it is lighter and can run faster.

Impressive, but I must admit I am biased toward conventional HST projects.

cost to build a maglev is not really high. maglev tracks in shanghai costed 300 million RMB/km. It is very close to subway that now costed about 500-700 million in cities like Beijing and shanghai. The cost for maglev can be reduced significantly since Shanghai maglev is only 30 km long and it is the first, many cost for research was put into it too.

The drawbacks for maglev is that cargo trains cannot run on its tracks, and it is not compatible with conventional lines. China's express railroads have two construction standard, one is 350km/hour or higher, another is 250km/hour. Cargo trains can run on the latter tracks if needed. Express trains of different standards can run on both lines Plus the existing old lines (More than 6000km of China's existing railways can run at 200km/hour now). This makes China's express railways as one network. Magleve cannot do it. It's tracks are too unique and must be seperated from al others.

For China, domestic factories can absorb techs for the conventional express railways faster. Most of them can be made in China. This is what China wants. But for maglev, I believe it still takes time.
