The music theme is about the tragic historical event: the defeat of King Xiang Yu who thought himself invincible. During the war which followed the foundation of the Han Empire (202 BC - 220 AD), Xiang Yu suffered a fatal defeat. The pipa depicts the scene of the battle, noises of the soldiers' flight, and the indescribable feeling of being defeated in King Xiang's mind. The performance of this piece demands a whole range of complex techniques and virtuosity, with speed, precision and restraint.
It tells a sad love story. Loves struggle caught in feudal strife and cruel social codes. Two lovers suffered because circumstances would rule against it. In the end they both chose to die as the ultimate sacrifice for eternal union that symbolize spiritual triumph. In the end of the story, both lovers became butterflies that could love and stay together freely.

The music tells the sad and struggling life of a blind begger in southeastern China in 1940s. The begger, whose name was Hua Yan Jun
, but most people simply remember his as Abing, was the composer. When communists took power and some musicians found him. He was asked to go to college to perform and teach. More than 200 of his musics were recorded, and many became famous. Unfortunately, he died soon in Dec. 1950 at age of 57.
