Indians among world's happiest people: Poll

11 Feb 2012,
New York:
Despite economic woes, wars, conflicts and natural disasters the world is a happier place today than it was four years ago and Indonesians, Indians and Mexicans seem to be the most contented people on the planet.

More than three-quarters of people around the globe who were questioned in an international poll said they were happy with their lives and nearly a quarter described themselves as very happy.

"The world is a happier place today and we can actually measure it because we have been tracking it," said John Wright, senior vice president of Ipsos Global, which has surveyed the happiness of more than 18,000 people in 24 countries since 2007.

But he added that expectations of why people are happy should be carefully weighed.

"It is not just about the economy and their well being. It is about a whole series of other factors that make them who they are today."

Brazil and Turkey rounded out the top five happiest nations, while Hungary, South Korea, Russia, Spain and Italy had the fewest number of happy people.

Perhaps proving that money can't buy happiness, residents of some of the world biggest economic powers, including the United States, Canada and Britain, fell in the middle of the happiness scale.

"There is a pattern that suggests that there are many other factors beyond the economy that make people happy, so it does provide one element but it is not the whole story," said Wright.

"Sometimes the greatest happiness is a cooked meal or a roof over your head," he explained. "Relationships remain the No. 1 reason around the world where people say they have invested happiness and maybe in those cultures family has a much greater degree of impact."

Regionally Latin America had the highest number of happy people, followed by North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa. Only 15 percent of Europeans said they were very happy.

On a more personal note married couples tended to be happier than singles but men seemed to be as content as women. Education and age also had an impact with more people under 35 saying they are very happy than 25-49 year olds. Higher education also equated with higher happiness.

Despite Woes, Conflicts, World a Happier Place than in 2007 as 22% (+2 points) of Global C

February 13 2012, 8:21 AM

Thursday, February 09, 2012

Toronto, ON
A new poll conducted by global research company Ipsos for What Makes You Happy Magazine finds that while eight in 10 (77%) citizens in 24 countries generally say they are happy in their lives, one quarter (22%) report they are very happya key measure that identifies comparative depth and intensity of happiness among country citizens and the world. Whereas the general assessment of happiness tends to remain fairly static over time, the measure of those who are very happy has the greatest amount of fluctuation.

The poll of 18,687 adults conducted from November 1st to 15th 2011 also demonstrates that those who are married (26% are very happy) appear to be the happiest when compared to all other groups, especially those who are not married (18%).

In fact, with measures tracked back to April, 2007, when respondents are asked to consider all things together, despite global financial woes and conflict, the world is apparently a happier place now than it was then when 20% reported they were very happytwo points back of where the world average is now.

Who are the Happiest People?

Apart from married people, demographically there is no statistical difference in happiness across gender (22%) but those who are under the age of 35 (25%) are more likely to say thet are very happy than those who are 35-49 (20%) and 50-64 (19%) across all countries surveyed. Socio-economics play a role as those with a high education (25%) and those with a high household income (24%) are among those most likely to be very happy.

Regionally, Latin America has the greatest proportion of people saying they are very happy, with one third (32%) of their population responding this way. North America is next with 27% followed by Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa tied (24%).

It is citizens in Europe who drag the global average assessment of happiness downward as only one in six (15%) say they are very happy. Nationally, Indonesia scores the happiest out of the 24 countries surveyed with just over half (51%) of citizens reporting they are very happy followed by India and Mexico at 43% each Brazil and Turkey tied at 30% each and Australia and the United States each at 28%. On the other end, Hungary (6%), South Korea (7%) and Russia (8%) have the lowest number of very happy people, followed by Spain (11%) and Italy (13%).

[linked image]

world is a happier place -- on an aggregate basis of the 24 countries, 20% of the global population reported being "very happy" in 2007 compared to 22% now. The highest range of world happiness was between March and April 2010 when the number was at its highest point of 26%. No doubt, there are numerous events and happenings that can cause happiness to go up and down -- and that's evident over the many months that the happiness measures have been tracked.

What about Individual Countries? Comparing 2007 to 2011 are their Citizens Happier or not?

Measuring the very happy group, the greatest improvements are found in Turkey (up 16 points since 2007) followed by Mexico (up 10 points), Australia (up 7 points), Japan (up 6 points) and India and Canada (each up 5 points).

Of the 24 countries measured less than half (9 countries) have experienced increases in happiness intensity compared with 13 that dropped and two countries with no change.

Those countries experiencing the greatest drop in happiness intensity were Brazil (down 9 points) followed by Indonesia (down 7 points), Russia (down 6 points) and South Africa (down 5 points).

The following list of countries shows the increase (+) or decline (-) of the very happy cohort compared with results for the same group measured in 2007:

Argentina +4
Australia +7
Belgium -2
Brazil -9
Canada +5
China N/C
France -1
Germany +3
Great Britain -3
Hungary -4
India +5
Indonesia -7
Italy +2
Japan +6
Mexico +10
Poland -1
Russia -6
Saudi Arabia -1
South Africa -5
South Korea -1
Spain -4
Sweden N/C
Turkey +16
United States -1

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos Global @dvisor (#27) poll conducted for What Makes You Happy Magazine. The survey instrument is conducted monthly in 24 countries via the Ipsos Online Panel system. The countries reporting herein are Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United States of America. An international sample of 18,687 adults aged 18-64 in the US and Canada, and age 16-64 in all other countries, were interviewed between November 1st and 15th, 2011. Approximately 1000+ individuals participated on a country by country basis with the exception of Argentina, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Russia and Turkey, where each have a sample 500+. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics and ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to the most recent country Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100% response rate would have an estimated margin of error of +/-3.1 percentage points for a sample of 1,000 and an estimated margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points for a sample of 500 19 times out of 20 per country of what the results would have been had the entire population of the specifically aged adults in that country been polled. The exact question asked was Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy or not happy at all?.

I usually take a neutral approach when it comes to threads regarding to India or China, but polls or surveys like this just require some commons sense. They said they surveyed 18,000 people in 24 countries well that basically sums it up how pathetic this poll is. India has 1.1 billion people how many people in India did they surveyed? Do they represent the entire society or the nation of India? Ask the millions of slum dwellers and see if they're happy. What about the people in Mexico, who or where did they survey? Many parts of Mexico are affected by drug violence and people die around them each day, ask them to see if they're happy. This survey is full of crap and for those that believe in this result is simply desperate or blinded by the true fact that is happening in those countries surveyed. Its like going into a movie theatre that has 400 people and I ask 10 people how good the movie is and use their feedback to represent all 400 folks.

People are satisfied with their life in comparison to others they live with.

If everyone around is poor then your own poverty wont effect your happiness.

You can have 40% child malnutrition but the rest will be happy knowing they got food for their child.

It is all relative.

I think in western socities people are more ambitious/materialistic so they are less satisfied with their lives, which drives achievement yet effects happiness.

Anyway that's just my opinion.

[Sorry but if Indians in India are among the world's happiest people then I will eat my hat.]

-Why does it bother you so much if someone is happy? Are you really that bitter?

If someone polled me this morning and asked if I was happy, I would have told them no, I was pissed off.. almost getting side swiped by a minivan trying to change lanes over a solid line on the highway will do that to someone.. but at the end of the day I'm happy I don't live in China or India..

So in the end, who cares?

People in Bhutan are reportedly the happiest people on earth, they calculate progress by using GNP or Gross National Happiness.

We know how happy first world countries like spain, portugal, italy etc are. Eurozone is bliss and world superpower America is controlled by illuminati, and host of shady secret societies (white house is just a puppet).

maybe money actually doesnt buy u happiness after all.

British PM David Cameron: There will be lots of questions about what support system bin Laden had in Pakistan, and we need those questions answered

White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan: Certainly his location there outside of the capital raises questions. We are talking to the Pakistanis about this. It's inconceivable that bin Laden did not have a support system in the country that allowed him to remain there for an extended period of time

Our government is in fiscal distress. To make contributions to a country that isn't going to be fully supportive is a problem for many, said US senate intelligence committee chair Dianne Feinstein

German chancellor Angela Merkel: The al-Qaida leader's death has exposed some gaps in antiterrorism campaign

French foreign minister Alain Juppe: I find it a little difficult to imagine that the presence of someone like bin Laden ... in a relatively small town could go completely unnoticed. Pakistans position lacks clarity in our view
