For example, let's say you like the Fifth or the Ninth. Then you take a Music Appreciation course and they explain how it works: conventional rules of a Symphony's structure were broken, and then you go "Ahhhhh" Then, you understand how Beethoven risked it and became one of the figures that permitted a new way of composing that lead to Romanticism.
But you liked the music first. Then the process, then the man. It doesn't have to be in tat order, but it works.
I think really good photography appeals to all, if not most, of the people, even though there may be good photography that only appeals to particular individuals, and for a number of different reasons.
