He has quite a command of all the reed instruments but quite often his phonic gymnastics and stage antics dull the experience for this Purist. My wife, however enjoyed the show so it was worth it for the evening for me. The decision was between The Cyrus Chestnut Trio and Tim Hagens. I was all set to see Hagens until I found out that James Carter was appearing with CC.
I can't recommend anything by either artist. I don't have any CC cd's and only one JC cd, "The Real Quiet Storm" which has him playing bari, tenor, alto and soprano. I like it but won't give it a hearty recommendation. Maybe you can sample come cuts from that one. I like some of CC's work when he's part of a rhythm section but have not been impressed with anything I've heard from his cd's.
